.htaccess wiped clean

Today I found that all the links from my index page were a 404.

After checking things out, I discovered that my .htaccess was completely empty (wiped clean).

Has my site been hacked?  Is there another explanation for this?

Is it possible that you were changing something in CPanel?

But everything was working great last night, and I didn't access my cpanel at all at this time or since.

I did clear my cache in admin... could this have done it?
