Please ensure your web server has mod_rewrite enabled for Apache, along with also making sure that your .htaccess file was successfully uploaded to the web server.

No, mod_rewrite is a module for Apache. Can you confirm to me that you also uploaded the .htaccess file?

Is the one in the root of your installation the original file from the Dolphin package? You can also check to make sure that mod_rewrite is enabled (or if not, enable) by visiting this web page: http://www.tutorio.com/tutorial/enable-mod-rewrite-on-apache

Is that all it has, or is that an excerpt? Also, ensure that you have checked the Apache configuration file as outlined in the web page I posted above.

Apache is a web server, and is the most widely used, also being the one developed in-mind by BoonEx. Dolphin uses .htaccess files, which are a feature of the Apache web server. mod_rewrite is a module for Apache which allows for "clean" URLs.

I can assure you, Apache is installed on your web server. Otherwise, you wouldn't have even gotten past the installation of the script. Just follow the tutorial in the web page I posted above to ensure that your web server is configured correctly.

Do you have any kind of control panel software installed on your web server? For example, Plesk or CPanel? You may also need to ask your web hosting provider the location to configure Apache.

These web hosting packages are intended to be used by more knowledgeable people who require the extra resources, not complete beginners. If you were given a money-back guarantee, and are within the allotted amount of time, you can request a refund and switch to a shared web hosting package. Of course, that's up to you, or you can always remain on your current web hosting package. If your web hosting provider will not even tell you the directory for Apache to configure its settings, they don't seem like the kind to receive services from.

Sorry, i don't normally use this kind of language, but... Your hosting company is a idiot.

You would not be able to install dolphin at all if there was not at least some kind of web server installed. And most ALL linux distros include apache as default.

This should be just a simple matter of enabling mod_rewrite, and on many distros like centos would also required that allow overrides be enabled for the directory dolphin is installed in.

I'm also wondering how he could of managed to install Dolphin unless Apache (or another web server?) was already installed. This has been more trouble than it should of been (though I don't mean the author).

So they gave you proper instructions on how to switch it over to apache?

Once the switch to apache is done, and mod_rewrite is enabled and ever thing else with php is setup for dolphin than you most likley will have to start the install of dolphin over again.

True, this carried on for far too longer than it needed to. This looked like a .htaccess issue, until he finally told us that Apache was not actually installed. I admit, my brain lapsed and ignored the possibility that his host made as much sense as purchasing the London Bridge.

I was going to offer to do dolphin installs for people, considering this is a VPS i might make a offer, but in general i would not because there is no way i will deal with the issues on a mom and pop $.50 cent shared server. I don't have the time to deal with that.

But there are other listed in the market that do offer dolphin installs for people.

A2 Hosting's VPS web hosting package currently costs $10.00/month. I don't know about you, but that is by far the cheapest I have ever seen for a VPS. Their shared web hosting package costs $4.00/month and is an unlimited data plan. Gotta' love this.

So, to save $25 a month he gets to spend alot of money on support from other areas.  Sounds like a great deal to me.  NOT!

Strongly suggest that the OP open his wallet a little and pay for a managed VPS or Shared Hosting Account from a reputable host and kill the idea of trying to manage his own VPS right now.  You will also notice that it says at the very beginning of the Dolphin Technical Requirements listings page that an Apache Server is a requirement with a Linux or Windows OS.  Here are the Technical Requirements for you:

Technical Requirements

Dolphin requires the following pre-requisites for your server:

  • Linux/Unix (Red Hat, Debian, FreeBSD, Mandrake, etc.) or Windows OS, Apache Web Server ver. 1.3
  • If you're going to use media streaming features in some Flash apps, you should have VPS or Dedicated server in order to install and run RMS (Ray Media Server). You should be able to access root or administrator account on that server. JRE (Java Runtime Environment) ver. 1.6 or higher should be installed on the server as well.
  • The ports 1935, 1936 and 5080 should be open on the server (where Dolphin is to be installed) and on the local computers of your site's members
  • register_globals must be Off
    safe_mode must be Off
exec() (executable files) must be allowed
    allow_url_fopen should be On
    allow_url_include should be Off
open_basedir should not have any value memory_limit should be 128M or higher
  • mbstring, domxml (only for PHP 4.x) and xslt extensions should be installed
  • The magic_quotes_gpc extension is also required starting from Dolphin 6.1.5 version
  • If some security module is installed on the server (such as mod_security for Apache), it should be able to be disabled or set up for specific folders.
  • Direct connection to boonex.com should be able to be established (i.e. connection without requiring proxy authorization).
  • You should be able to run executable files (necessary for ffmpeg.exe)
  • The server should be able to read any document located in public_html directory via http protocol.
  • Sendmail or Postfix programs for sending emails
  • 20MB of disk space and 1MB of MySQL DB space for installation
  • 8MB of disk space and 50KB of MySQL DB space for an average user
  • Your server should allow 15 KB/sec for media streaming capabilities for each user.

If all the above requirements are met on your server then you are ready for installation.

Check the Hosting page to choose among recommended hosting providers.

If you want to add Dolphin to your cpanel automatic installation you should follow these instructions. These instructions are for Hosting providers and/or VPS/Dedicated server holders.

You can find them at this link:

http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/DolTech

You'll note that it has alot more requirements to it beyond Apache, but that is where it starts.  Forward those requirements to your host and see if they will assist in server set up but I really recommend finding a new host that is familiar with Dolphin and going with them instead.  Just remember, in the web business, you truly do get exactly what you pay for and nothing more, ever.  Alot of times you will get even less.
