A bunch of module questions

If anyone could help me with answers to these I would appreciate it.

  1. I am trying to uninstall Files, Photos, Sounds, Videos, and the Orca Forum.  When I try this I get an error that I must uninstall Events and Store first.  But I want to keep the Events and the Store.  How do I fix this?
  2. Is the Flash Modules A/V Chat, Desktop, and Messenger the same as the Chat, Desktop, and Messenger in the Modules?  Or are they different and I should only have one or the other installed?
  3. What is the difference between Messenger and Simple Messenger?  And what exactly are these?
  4. What is Desktop?  I see it both in modules and Flash Modules, but do not see it on my site.
  5. What are the implications of uninstalling Google Search?  Will that get rid of that pesky search icon on my top menu?
  6. What is Open Social?  It is in my modules, but I don't see it in the menus or anywhere?
  7. What are the implications of uninstalling Feedback?
  8. What is Profiler?  Is that part of creating profile fields and the profile searches?

Thanks in advance.

I can try to answer some of these.

1) You don't. These modules have features that require features in the other modules to work correctly. This is the reason it tells you that you can't remove them. These are called dependencies. So you need to leave them installed. But you can remove access to them by removing the menu items. It has been mentioned in the forums that there is a way to force this, but i strongly disapprove of that to avoid problems you might end up having problems tracking down later.

2) They are the same. If you remove the module, then it will either disappear from the flash apps or become disabled.

3) They are the same. It's a little IM window. When someone is online, a link to send a message will appear in the actions block in the profile. When the first message is sent, and IM window will become available in the bottom user menu. It allows instant messages to be sent.

4) Desktop is an optional desktop application for windows. When installed it provides access to certain features of the site without the need to open a browser and visit the site. I don't use it, so am not familiar with it.

5 No problem removing it. I don't use it either. But no, it will not get rid of the search icon. That search is a local search, not a google search.

6 Open social is crap. Look it up on google. You can install open social gadgets in dolphin, but most are useless.

7. None. removal just means your members can't leave feedback. So if you don't want site feedback then remove it.

8 The profiler is a diagnostics tool. I don't know how it works, and i have heard it causes problems if it's left installed. Should only be installed if needed, but i don't quite understand it's use.

I am the one who wrote that tutorial, and I clearly state that you should use your own judgement depending on which module you are trying to remove. In the future, I will go further in detail and explain how to completely remove the dependencies, from the simple configuration files, to functions and even database entries.

As of now, the only module dependencies I suggest not editing are the Store, Payment and Membership modules, since they all rightfully depend (heavily, even) on each other. Even still, I suggest anyone removing these dependencies use caution, and even look into going further by completely removing dependencies beyond the simple dependency check trick I described in my topic. There are many functions and database entries all described in the installation files, which, if properly looked at, will allow you to easily accomplish this.

And I can't remember who wrote Deano's Tools.

So regarding question #1 and the answers above, I have removed them from the menu.  However, I cannot find a way to remove them from the User menu on the bottom.  I've looked all over for this, and have yet to find a way.  The menu I am talking about is the member menu at the bottom of the screen when you are logged in.  There is a Profile menu, and on this submenu are Files, Photos, and Videos.  I need to get rid of this.

I will look at the info about removing them completely.  I have no problem leaving the Store, Payment, and Membership modules.  Those dependencies make sense to me.  But why the Orca Forum is dependent upon the Store and Events makes no sense at all.

@Magnussoft - Could you point me to the info on removing dependencies?

Because of you, I've now written a useless tutorial. Ha!

As mentioned before, use caution when using this method, as it could result in undesired operation of your web site. To answer your question, the Forum module (Orca) is dependant on those modules because they include an integrated forum for the discussion of the products and events.

Thank you for the warning.  I will read about it and then decide.

Any ideas on how to get the items off the member Profile menu if I don't want to remove dependencies and uninstall?

I am not aware of a way to remove certain entries without removing all of them. I figured I should answer and not just leave you in the dark. Unless anyone else knows and wants to share?

I appreciate you responding back.  So basically, what you are telling me is that I MUST remove the dependencies and uninstall the modules in order to remove them from my menus so that they cannot be used.  That does not seem like a very good system to me.

As I said, I am unaware of a way to have selected modules be displayed. Can this be done? Certainly. Do I know? No. Someone else will have to chime in on this.

I've just been playing with this - unfortunately it is not a straightforward fix. You will need to delete it from the sys_menu_member table - look for the entry named bx_sounds. You will then have to delete the contents of your cache folder + clear your cache. This should remove the link to the sounds from your member menu.

There is one caveat however - without having a deeper look, I'm not exactly sure how the bx_sounds entry is added to the sys_menu_member table in the first place. Hopefully this is done at the time of the module installation, which means that it will remain deleted, but there is a chance that it may get added as a result of some other action - in which case it will reappear.

Thanks DeeEmm.  That is really helpful, as I can't get the method by Magnussoft to work for uninstalls, only installs.

Deleting the entries out of the database worked like a charm.  Too bad that menu can't be customised easily.
