Add sound notification to simple messenger

Blinks are not enough! Facebook has sound notification when new message received. This is really important. You can't be in front of the computer all the time, staring at the monitor to check if someone writes you a message.

I think Boonex should consider integrating sound notification in the next D7 release.

I agree, when somone initiates an IM, the little window popping up in the upper left isn't really enough.  I would like a beep too and was planning to look into making a fix.

Unless, you don't mean they removed all beeping in IM in version 7? Cry

I suppose they didn't consider it too big of a deal since you only show as online if you've clicked a page on the site within the last 5 minutes.  I really wish you could idle in chat and be shown as online.

Yes, totally agree!

Users appear offline after 5 minutes inactivity. That's not good at all!!! This turns the website from active one into inactive one, so people would think that there's no activity going on in there because already everyone went offline.

I address this proposal to the creators of Dolphin cause this is something I got as a complaint from many many members in my community.

30 min should be fine :)

Yes, maybe setting it to 30 or more would help. :)

Thanks pal!

Anyway, we still need the sound notification when new message received in simple messenger.

Yea, but in my case I don't want "fake status."  I think 5 minutes is a good call generally.  I just want the online status to stay online if they're idling in chat, waiting for someone to show up - again, so they don't have to poll the site every 5 minutes.

And if IM beeped, then the IM will show up on the chat page and alert them.  It will definitely help site activity, but with complete honesty.

This would be an awesome edition!  A lot of the time I'm logged in but browsing another page or website and I don't see if someone's left me a message.

Could we get a ticket on this?

Quote · 11 Feb 2010

Another great edition, beside the sound,  would be for it to NOT stop blinking when someone refreshes the page OR navigates to another page. I have had several members, who are still getting used to the new version, not even notice the IM in the member bar because they we navigating through the site.

EDITED: Ya know, it probably would hurt to have a popup message the same way one happens when you invite a member to video chat from the simple messenger. I nice window pops up and says accept decline, etc.

Just another suggestion

Exactly, EvenStar2212,

As site admin particularly, I want to be able to idle in chat while I'm browsing other sites or knee deep in programming.  I tend to forget to refresh every 5 minutes when I'm trying to fix or mod Dolphin.  A few other of my site users have been known to do the same, but they're doing it less frequently now because people just don't check chat unless they expect someone to be there (like an event).

Zarcon & all, I won't have time to upgrade to version 7 for some time, but in version 6 you got the pop-up in the upper-left corner to alert you to IMs.  It would pop-up in all pages you had open to the site, and if you navigated, it would pop-up again.  This doesn't happen in version 7 anymore??  It just blinks the status bar?  Man, that was so useful.

I completely agree with you guys. Boonex should do something about it. Also, another thing that's very annoying is the update interval of chat messages. When chatting in facebook, you can type you message with the speed of light and the person on the other end receives it instantly. Here, if you type fast and hit the 'enter' button, you get the 'please wait' alert. So they have to hold on for 3-4 secs and type again.

In addition to the simple messenger that is, I must admit, quite essential part of Dolphin script, when you open to see who's online from friends using the bottom navigation bar, you can't simply click on the friends listed online and start a chat. If you do that, you get to see their profile instead of starting a chat. If you want to start a chat, you have to point the cursor above that person you are trying to contact and wait for the 'actions' pop up to apeear and there start typing a message in the chat field. Then, you get to chat with that person, although you have to turn off that pop up manually later because it stays there until you close it by yourself.

I'm not an expert, I'm just an actor having such crazy hobby as Dolphin. :) So, I hope there will be someone out there who will be able to fix it.

I don't know what the issue is, but I have mine set to 30 minutes, and many times I'll refresh the home page, and the stats block will say something like 10 online, but the little icon on the member menu shows that I have 15 or more friends online.  Weird.

Quote · 13 Feb 2010

I can confirm that. Also, if you set it to 30 mins, even your friends logged off some time ago, they will still appear online.

I noticed that as well... it seems that actually logging out should override the 30 minute setting.

Stats block has the online time hard coded to 5 min.

I made a stats bock guide and put it on the market. It covers changing the online time.

Nice tip- hadn't noticed that!  Thanks!

There is a Free Extension that lets you add a sound notification to the IM. Works great!!!

Go to the Market and Search Instant Message, it should come up.

I have installed free mod for simple messenger sound notification. I works great for me except in IE8.

I got it eventually working on IE8 on one of me testing domains but when installed on live, it wasn't working in IE8 again.

Anyone knows what could cause this problem?

Thanks,

V.

Not sure, but I'd like to know what extension you bought because I'd like to look into it.

The free sound notification for simple messenger does not work for me on D7.

Quote · 12 Mar 2012

Why not just create an update for simple messenger that plays a sound that does not require modifying php scripts?

The mods that are out there are not mods at all but just directions on how to mod.

Why not just create a new module as an update and just have people uninstall the old and install the new?
