Admin screen blackout during boonex server outage

I could not access my B5 admin screen tonight while the boonex site was unavailable for awhile. I was able to get into my v6.16 admin page just fine, but not the b5 admin screen, until later in the evening when I was also able to access the boonex website again.

And? I don't see a question here.

Dolphin does communitate with a database with boonex to check license keys, among other things.

I strongly believe they need to find a better way of handeling that, but it's the way it is.

This is definitely WRONG, we should ALWAYS access the panel even if boonex server is down.. the license system should update and recheck key once a day (not on every admin panel login), so if the server is down we are still able to use the CP..

Please note that in my original post, I commented that I could get to my admin screen Just fine from my D6.16 installation. This is only a problem in D7 - so it should be fixable

modmysite sent out an email about this yesterday letting people know what was going on and they (in a very smart move) pitched their ability to remove this connection so this won't happen to your site.

Someone on one of the Blogs said that our sites would go down if Boonex servers went down.  That's not true, is it?   The blog post was a rant with other strange accusations.  Still, if there is even an element of truth to this it is a serious concern.    Could someone here - preferably from Boonex, put our minds to rest about this.

modmysite send this message:

If you are a aeDating or Dolphin user, you maybe alarmed if you try to login to your administration panel. The login may not work, or take a very long time.

The admin panel code has a "call-back" to the BoonEx site to verify license information and get latest version information from BoonEx.

However, as of about 8PM (Eastern Standard Time), the BoonEx (and ExpertZZZ) website is down.

This will cause problems for many of you logging into your administration panel.

This problem should clear once the BoonEx site is operational again.

Another option is to remove this "call-back" - this is available from ModMySite if this interests you.

What is this "call back"? Does anyone know how to do this if we are on a VPS?

Thanks.

It's a lousy system.  If you have paid for a license, there is no reason you should EVER have to deal with this.

Why Boonex can't go to an encrypted, domain-locked license key system, escapes me.  There are many low cost solutions that will generate these keys automatically, and customize the download package for the user according to the license level they purchased.

For those of you that don't know what this is, an encrypted license file resides on your server which the main script needs to execute properly.  The encrypted key works on a single domain and is useless on any other, thus preventing piracy.

To have thousands of Dolphin sites dependent on the Boonex license server being up 100% of the time is completely asinine.

Agreed Houston. I use other softwares that use that technology and I remember this topic being brought up before. Hope they come up with a solution.....

Irepton, I'm thinking about organizing a road trip to Bishkek to smack these guys around a bit.  Are you in?

License checking in Dolphin 6.1.6 and Dolphin 7 was changed. Since this change there no any connection between your and boonex site, during every login to admin panel. It connect to boonex site only when you enter the license or change it.

The only reason may cause this problem is boonex rss feed in admin panel, it tries to get boonex news feed from boonex site, but you can disable this feed in Dolphin 6.1.6 clicking on the link below this feed.

Thanks for the clarification Alex.  Maybe you can change this, so that if the rss feed cannot be retrieved, it will time out and not prevent admin from loading?

There is already system timeout, but maybe for someone it is set by default too long.

I'd like to.  Perhaps we can meet in the Boonex parking lot with flip-towels and settle some of our differences like men.  What kind of beer to you guys have in Bishkek?
