Adsense

Hi All,

I want to add Adsense to my Articles, Blogs, Forums etc on D7, so here are a few questions:

1. Should i Run with the Forum that's already included in D7, or get an other one?

2. How do I Add the ads so that they are automaticly generated inside the forum on each new topic... inside the blog that users create, and in all the articles?

3. If you have any great ideas / mods, that help earn money on sites, please let me know!

Thx

You need to add it to the sub_footer.html file.

Thx.. But do you know anything about the other questions I had?

I don't know about you, but having advertisements inside forum and blog posts sound more like a proper way to lose both members and money, not gain them.

As for which forum software to use for your community, I would only recommend Orca if you just need a basic solution with fancy Javascript tricks. And when I say basic, I really mean basic.

Why do you think that? I've seen a lot of forums where every 5th post or so is ads..

I think he is thinking about the fact that the users don't like ads and will leave the site...

If users were to leave a site because they don't like adverts then the internet would be a very quiet place. I see nothing wrong with trying to make a bit of extra cash through Google ads.

Saying that, you should also be able to use the _footer.html file too. Though I have to admit that using the _footer.html file worked well for D6 but I can't seem to get it to appear in D7. Has anyone done it yet?

With regard to your question about implementing a third party forum, I was able to do that in D5 but not D6. I had to start my forum all over again when I had no choice but to use Orca. I'm afraid to say that it doesn't look like its made much headway in D7 and my members are constantly complaining about it. Would hsve posted a few comments from them but I don't want to hijack this thread.............lol!

Interesting.  If users don't like all the ads, they will leave your site.  On the other hand, if they like the ads, they will click on them, and leave your site.

II never did understand why some people try so hard to get people to navigate away from their site.  In my opinion, Google ads plastered all over a site, makes that site look cheap.

I agree, and I would never do it all over..

However, I would like to do it a little bit, because I need to earn something also.

 Hence the reason I have them only at the bottom of the page. Cool

Does that give anything?

The fact is: if the advertisement is not appealing to the user, they will not click it. If the same advertisement is plastered all over the site, even in their blog and forum posts, they will obtain homicidal qualities.

I've been able to easily make money from appealing advertisements, placed in a specially-designated area of the site where it is made to blend-in with the surroundings (but not make it hidden) as to not pop-out and screw up the look. And most of the time, I only have one advertisement. That's it.

And if they have an extension such as Adblock Plus enabled, then it will not matter either way, as they will never see an advertisement. The only thing to do about that is either add a special banner for Adblock Plus users to consider disabling their extension for your site, or try to recover costs from people without it.

has anyone been able to get ads to show up in the footer_html? Had it working fine in D6.

Someone better contact Facebook and MySpace quick before everyone leaves their sites because of ads.  Obviously they are doing it all wrong ;)

 ......well maybe not word for word....hehe!

 It's almost as if something is blocking the html.

You're joking right?  You're comparing sites with 100 million members with dolphin sites?  I guess when you have that many members, you can put as many obnoxious ads as you want on your site.  I would think, however, that until you get to that point, your primary objective would be to attract members, and not work so hard on giving them ways to navigate away from your site.  But.... like I said... it's only my perspective.

I'm definitely going to have advertising on my site, but I'm going to do it in a way that attracts members... not lead them away.

Amen HL. If done the right way and subtle, some ads can add different design elements, making a page look fuller. However if someone wants it to look like MySpace on steroids, then I may steer clear of them. One reason myspace takes so long to load pages is because it is so junked up with everybodys own HTML code and Flash and Video ads. Too many in my opinion, but whatever I still use MS to promote stuff LOL.

Well.... I'm going to have two things that should someday generate revenues, but they'll be free for quite a while.  Since my site is very localized, I'm going to have a business directory, where local businesses can place their own ads.  They won't have to be a member of the site to do so.  Houston TX has a huge business base, so I can solicit ads from local restaurants, hotels, retail businesses, service businesses, etc.....  Like having the yellow pages on my site, only the ads would have pictures, a Google location map, contact info, etc.   The ads will be in a business directory accessible from the main nav menu.  The idea is to give members a place to peruse restaurants, find a plumber, electrician, etc.  The local businesses, will of course, eventually, be charged a very competitive price to place the ad.  Houston has a huge business base, and a thousand business ads, is not an unreasonable goal.  I will also have a job board where members can post resumes, and apply for jobs online.  The Employers would pay a competitive rate to place the job ad. Again, this approach will work in large metropolitan areas, but may not be a viable option for less populous region

I made a promis to myself to never place a single google ad on my site, and I will never, ever, break that promise.

Why say no to google ads?

RE: Why say no to google ads?

1. They are annoying

2. They are ugly

3. They make a site look sleazy, and unsophisticated.

4. They are a great way to get people to leave your site

5. Unless you have an incredibly busy site, the revenue generated is simply a waste of my time.  There are better ways to make money.  I have absolutely no interest in making a few hundred bucks a month.  Show me how to make 10 or 20 thousand bucks a month, and I might be interested.

for google ads you go administration>tools>banner>type your title>click active>in text put the code>set date if you want>select positin - use shifts to move it if needed)>preview>save>wait about 10 minutes for the ads to show.

If you need to change something again you must click 'edit' again, regardless the feature's showing or not.

Here you can see example http://civoc.com at the bottom.

Yes, some of you're right, Adsense is not optimal. at least they should open in new windows. I'm gonna take it off when the site's getting populated and replace them with other sponsors.

I can't edit it in chrome so I use FF.

you can use HShift and VShift, either left or right side. You put in the pixels from the top and from the side. It doesn't work in Google chrome. An example you can see on the site where it says 'your ad here' on the top

I found a mod that looks great...

With this, it seems like you have options to put it more places..

That's maybe help for some, but with the banner features I can place ads almost in any location, without upsetting content.

if you want to center it just add <center> before the adsense code and </center> at the end.

 To centre any <div> a handy bit if CSS code is to specify the width of the div the ad a margin each side with auto specified.

e.g.

.adsenseFooter {
      width: 998px;
      margin-left: auto;
      margin-right: auto:
}
