Advertising alternatives

Hmmm... Not bad for a crazy haired ... well, . lol!

It's got some merit. I wouldn't think it would ever replace Google adwords and such because it loses the targeting aspect of that type of advertising but on a community site like the one you are building, it might just work. I'd say go for it and see what happens.

I own the name denverpotholes.com - At some point, I have a small ambition to build a city site something like yours and I would try it just to see what happens.

How does it work after you submit.  Does it just show the url of the site when you click on the words in the list ?

Clicking of unclaimed words, takes the user to the order form.

Sounds a bit like an advertising banner that leads to a 404 page. Why would a visitor looking through adverts want to visit an order form to place an advert?? The two areas should really be kept separate. Would it not be better to only show words that have been paid for? - this saves disappointment for visitors  + you can then let advertisers pick their own words.

Whilst I can understand not wanting 'in your face' adverts, I would say that, having a separate page for advertisers generally tends to provide a convenient way of avoiding them - great for visitors - bad for advertisers. Most advertisers require statistical data to prove their investment is working for them, if everyone is avoiding the adverts page - then it will soon be apparent to the advertisers that their investment is a waste of money.

Personally I think that the best implementation of this kind of idea is word links - where words are replaced within submitted content with rollovers linking to sponsored content. Each rollover constitutes an impression - This way, advertisers get impressions - visitors don't have to go anywhere, there are no banners, and everyone is more or less happy.

The art of advertising, is to do it blatantly - but, without being blatant.

HL, why not run a business directory?

IMHO - it's perfect for a local community site, and you can then charge for premium listings.

Businesses can enter listing for free, but premium listing appear at top of category / top of search results / etc... You can also spotlight / showcase businesses on front page block / in newsletter etc You can even link to the directory from within posted content (if you like).

It's a totally different concept than google adwords..... being that it has nothing to do with google.com or searching.

I wish it was a little easier to add third party apps to a Dolphin page when the app is in a subdirectory.  I really hate using iframes.

I actually used this on a site which received about 250.000 individual page views per month. Now I know that that's not a lot when compared to other huge commercial projects but the site had a visitor return rate of about 70% and those words never got clicked on. We implemented that page for 3 months and had 2 clicks in all of that time. Makes sense too when you consider the fact that those ad words appear on an ad page which is instantly recognized by just about anyone as being a page that's filled with nothing but ad words. I mean, what else could those words be, right? I think that most people are NOT "curious" enough to click on a word just to find out what unknown treasure might be hidden behind it ....
Most people probably figure out right from the get go that these are ads.

I agree with DeeEmm about the rollovers. Those ads are awesome for any page that contains lots of or very important text since it's almost impossible not to, at least inadvertently, hover over some of these ads with your mouse on occasion ... which then instantly rolls or pops open that anoying little advertising window that nobody wants to see.

RE: Rollovers.  Funny you should mention those.  Of every ad type I have ever experienced, rollover ads are the most incredibly annoying thing I have ever experienced on a web page.  It's more annoying than blinking text.  Whoever invented rollover ads should have their nuts cut off.  They make me leave any website that has them regardless of how much I may have wanted to view the content

I actually agree 100% but you also have to consider that millions and millions of internet users tend to stick around at a place that has something that they need. Like you, if I see those ads that's it, I'm outta there ... but they work and they work well ... because it uses a factor that almost nobody can get around. That inadvertent little click as you're cruising around on your screen with the mouse. The idea itself, for its intended purpose, is ingenious really. Well, whatever. I hate online ads too and our .org project is going to be completely ad free (unless some of the flash games have built-in ads).

If you can sell the words off then guess it doesn't matter if they get clicked or not - probably just need to find a different sucker next time tho - lol

How about a different slant on it...

You've probably seen the wp cumulus tag cloud (animated tag cloud) http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-cumulus/ it's pretty easy to convert your ad word cloud to use it - it takes up less space and so is less intrusive - this way you can put it into each page - in a side column. There's increased exposure for advertisers, visitors will find it more interesting and are more likely to click it, and you may even get some click through traffic from visitors thinking it's actually a tag cloud.

Or... you could just use the same thing on the page you already have - you just get to fit more words in there.

Nice idea, it has actually been done before.  It was pretty popular to do this back in the mid nineties.  Google actually invented a better mouse trap.
