Aland Islands How do I block IP's from this country? Better yet. How can I just allow U.S.A., Canada, and Great Britain IP's?

I also have too many spammer signups form this annoying Aland Island. You can block them by disabling signups from @mail.ru etc. it has been posted before here, search it. What is the problem of Aland Island, they don't have any work other than spamming?????? so much to do.... |

Free mod by eSASe
You can select exactly which countries can join in admin and it works. I use this on my sites, not had a single spam problem since installing. Brilliant mod and its free! |
One question: Does it block their IP? Reason I ask. Is if someone choose say the United States. Wouldn't they be able to sign up? You know go around the system. I think one that detects IP's would be better. |
I installed that module. How do you use it? It has a box to check to let all country's join. There are no instructions on how to use it. No way to restrict certain countrys. It looks like it is either restrict all countrys or not all countries. |
I tested that thing and it does not work. Now the United States is blocked. I got to get rid of that thing. |
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I deleted that damn mod and nobody in the U.S. can join the site! |
Oh Thank God. I fixed it. |
Its simple to use. Install, goto the admin section for it. Then it has 2 options Either you allow all countries, or you select the ones you want to be able to join and leave the others un-selected. If using a pc, you have to control click each on to do multiple selections, if a mac, then same with cmd button. Once you select the list of countries you want to allow, then click submit.
It then blocks all countries you have not selected to allow for membership.
Ive installed it on about 8 sites and it has stopped spam on all of them while still allowing only the countries I choose to allow.
The mod works fine for me :-) |
Well, the way the interface is you have a check in the box that allows all countried to join. If you want to block certain ones. You have to uncheck the box. Highlight each country and hit submit. On my interfave you have to do one at a time. There is no selecting so many then hitting submit. |
Like I said, If you are on pc hold control while selecting each item, then you can select multiple items, if on a mac, do the same using the cmd key. |
Actually I was doing it wrong. Totally wrong. You chose the countries you want to allow to sign up on your site and hit submit. |
However you do it, it looks like people are always able to join from Aland Islands. So I gave up using it. ........................................... |
dealsaround Your absolutely right. That mod does not work correctly at all. I tested it over and over. Sometime it will even block the U.S. If you block Aland Islands it does not work. I though it actually was going to work because for one day and one night. I did not get anybody from that region. The next day there were 10 more signed up! All they talk about is "Ugg". Some of them were changing the name a little, but you can tell it is the same so many people adding profile after profile. And their blogs are pathetic! |

I run a content site. Here's how we deal with spam. I do not know how much is transferable to other businesses, I do not think many other people are using Dolphin as we do; however I hope some of this might help those feeling beleaguered by waves of unwanted Chinese invaders. We removed blogs some time ago - they were an exercise in futility. If they go back they will be on a paid for basis. Articles, which are the bread and butter of the site are set to have every submission approved before appearing. ( We now have a new membership level where some people get automatic approval - this is saving lots of work.) A few weeks ago I was getting literally hundreds of Uggs and similar junk posted every day. It was a regular shitstorm. I manually deleted them all. I worked on the premise that continued long enough it would stop, I was right. After a while the volume fell right back to a trickle. I simply set the approvals page to show a large number of articles and clicked to delete in bulk. Saved loads of time In addition I have removed the ability to use live URLs from comments and profiles - we do not get too many comments and any with live links are almost always spam anyway. I don't mind folks signing up and making profiles that can't have links in them. I needed to do some upgrading and quickly found that the spam protection modules were worse than useless, disabling regular contributors from posting - we got rid of that within 48 hours. Recently, I had some changes made to the Ultimate Articles mod that runs our articles function. Now, all articles must have a minimum wordcount - bye bye more spam. The manual snippet function made it even easier to spot the rubbish still slipping through the net. I found a hack that made formatting of articles much better and that also, as a side effect, worked to show up more spam - articles that are posted as a single block of text are invariably spam; we see 'em, we delete 'em. No more messing around. We do not ban any IP blocks and we do not ban any countries. Over the past month we banned, IIRC, two accounts. Overall, our acceptance rate, after all this, is around 50%, it will fall soon as we up our standards again to deal with the poor quality English that is an inevitable part of our work but is, IMHO often not spam, just folks who can't write in English. ;) |
