I was wondering if 1 click updates from the Dolphin Admin panel would be
possible for future updates? I'm reading all these horror stories and I
am NOT updating to 7.0.1 because of this. Also, I hear that any 3rd
party mods that I added to my site will be lost....who in their right
mind would want to upgrade? I think 1 click upgrades from the Dolphin
Admin would be the best way to go for future updates (if possible). If
installing a Dolphin made mod is that easy from Dolphin Admin panel, why isn't
the update that easy? I'm not being a smart a$$, this is a serious
question for a serious problem. If anyone knows the answer, please post. |
No, there are never going to be one click updates from the admin panel.
Most of us wouldn't even want some automated process altering our
sites. The Dolphin platform consists of approximately five thousand
files, and probably 100,000 lines of code.
The question you should be asking is, who in their right mind would
would NOT want to upgrade. There are hundreds of bug fixes in 7.0.1,
and there will probably be well over a hundred more fixes in 7.0.2
The only horror stories I hear, come from inexperienced users, that
panic at the slightest little glitch. You don't make horror stories go
away by ignoring critical updates, or by having inventing some
automated process do everything for you. Sooner or later, you'll have
to get your hands dirty, and dig into things, and start learning how
Dolphin works..... just like the rest of us that have been around for a
while. Everybody needs to get to the point where they feel comfortable
performing upgrades, and not get into a panic when some simple thing
goes wrong.
The upgrade from 7.0 to 7.0.1 is probably the easiest one there has ever
been. You can thank me for that, because I whined incessantly for
Boonex to provide an upgrade patch from version to version, that
contained ONLY the changed files. Now, instead of needlessly
overwriting 5,000 files, you only overwrite 550 files.... still a hefty
chunk of files, but it's 4,500 less than the way it used to be. In my
case, I uploaded the new files, ran the upgrade script, and everything
worked just fine. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
You are right Houston but me being someone who is fairly new to Dolphin, I have no programming knowledge, so I am unable to "get my hands dirty" without me damaging my site somehow by tinkering at something I shouldn't be. The thought of losing the 3rd party mods I had put in is the main reason I don't want
to upgrade.

Everybody on this site started off as someone fairly new to Dolphin. Probably the best thing you could do, is set up a Dolphin site just for testing and learning things. It's always a good idea to install modules and do upgrades on a test site before applying them to a live site. I honestly don't trust BoonEx for a proper automated upgrade solution that wouldn't also activate a military supercomputer with the mindset of a nine year-old boy who likes to play chess, but instead, you demand the two of you play global thermonuclear war, instead, because you still think it's a fun game, but in reality, you're about to destroy the world. I used to theorize that your posts had some sort of deep philosophical meaning. I was wrong.

You do know that Jessica Alba was about 2 years old when War Games came out??

I was mixing the time periods a bit so as to appeal to this younger generation.
And I am not a pedophile. But I did know a man named Peter File, once.
