Best strategy for dealing with couples

Based on past posts in this forum this sounds like it is a tired topic, but I really could use some advice on setting up a site that supports couples.  I've tried implementing couples two ways, the "global couple" method and by creating a group to represent the couple, and I'm having problems with both approaches.

With the "global couple" method the problems I run into are:

  • the second person is not searchable
  • the second person's profile information is not editable outside of the join form

With the groups method, the process of creating a group to contain the couple and populating the group is way too complicated.  On top of that the the terminology is way off for this purpose and the prerequisites of the orca forum, files, videos, sounds, etc., seems totally unnecessary.

It would almost be better if there was simply an "family" or "add to couple" action button, sort of like a friend button that could be used to indicate the relationship between the members of the couple rather than go through the group process.

Are there other options?  My site has to support singles and couples.  At this point I'm looking back to the global couple option.  One advantage being that the couple can pay a single membership fee instead of two.  Has anyone figured out why the second profile is not editable and what to do to fix that issue?

Thanks.

I just ran into this situation with my client at www.nannyaupair.com.au

Not only did they want a family, but they wanted an AuPair type of membership.  The ability to create Membership Types and to search on them, is missing in the core Boonex Dolphin functionality.

Enter, AntonLV, well known and respected Boonex Developer from the Unity Community.  He has written a mod that I stand by 100% to do this type of work.  Not only does it handle the creation of the members types, but it handles the searches and the membership type access control.

It was well worth the $150.00 I spent on it.  If you wind up purchasing it, tell Anton I said hi.  He was very supportive in helping me meet the needs of my client.

Good luck.

Regards,

Bob
