Changing lang keys

For some reason i cant change the lang keys thru the admin panel, so i have been changing thru the lang-en.php file, but for some reason every couple of days it changes back to the way it was before. Can someone tell me how to do this so that it stays?

Are you doing a recomplie when the keys change back.  Also what error/problem do you get when you try to change through the admin area?

i dont recall the error just got an error at the top twice and decided to to it thru the back end. i havent recompiled however, i have had some mods installed. That may be the problem.

Does the error at the top showup when you type into the text box and hit enter?  If so, type the string into the text box and click on the square box next to it to bring the list of matches.  Then you shouldn't have any problem from there.

Also if you are going to make language changes to mods you must realize they have their own language file.  So if you make the change via the admin languages panel, and then the mod somehow is recompiled, the mod's default language will over-write your change.  You need to make mod language changes in the mod's language file (modname/install/langs/) and then recompile the mod's language file via the Tools>Modules>Recompile Langs option.

You are right that clicking edit just reloads the page, however this is the incorrect way to edit the file and I'm making a ticket to see if they will remove the option.

To edit the language file you need to either find the key or string of text you wish to edit using the Manage Keys area.  You search for the key you wish to edit, click on "apply" and it will show the string, you click edit next to the string and the popup will appear so you can edit the string.  If you wish to add to the language file you need to create a new key.  This is the proper way to edit that file.

Hi.

I am trying to edit the lang keys as described and I get the 'pop-up' box, etc., but the 'save' button does not work. Any clues as to what I am doing wrong here.

I have all the correct permissions, etc..

Not sure why the save button wouldn't work, but it does take a few secs for it to respond on my installation before giving the "Language Key was Successfully Saved" message. The language key system, however, was frustrating enough that I finally bought the Master String Editor module to make it easier. Sorry that my only 'fix' (once again) is to buy a module, but that is the main way I've gotten around Dolphin glitches/limitations.
