My idea is to start this topic so everyone can post the spamming china ip's that they have blocked so others can block them as well. I will start. This is what I have so far today. Both from China.
(When you post new ip's, copy the ones from the post before to your list so people just have to copy one list. Thanks.)
I tried that mode by ease for blocking whole countries but it seems to not work well. When I blocked china, still received spam from China.
If you have blocked ip's from other countries, please post the name of the country beside the ip. Thanks.
If I could export the blocked ip's from hotmail, I could share over 4,000 ips to block. :( Hotmail does not have that function.

Ending the China spamming is simple to achieve now. Have you read the past topics on this?
There are several steps now,
- adding an extra field to the join form i.e. "Are you human," and making it mandatory.
- splitting your join form, making it two pages.

Newton is correct.. you'll drive youself crazy trying to block by IP. BoonEx Certified Host: Zarconia.net - Fully Supported Shared and Dedicated for Dolphin |
Yes, I agree. Blocking IP's made go mad years ago. It feels way to much like work, lol. I like the extra field idea. Thanks guys, time to do a bit more reading. Why do those Chinese spammers even join the site. The description they put in the site always says stuff like, " Buy cheap jeans" or something like that. No links, no info? They don't even log into the site so that I can get their IP. I always have to get their IP inside cpanel. They just join and thats it. Whats the point? Thanks to everyone for all the help. |

Well first off,
"they" are not a person, your dealing with bots.
back in the day before we had the spam controls built in, the spammers would fill your site up with blogs with website links in the content of the blog.
Dolphin sites have some vulnerabilities that we all share, common page names..
one of the most common search terms I see in my sites logs....if you search this term in google, it returns only Dolphin sites, and they attack..
"powered by dolphin" inurl:/join

I have actual spammers joining, not bots. For sure cause I have the question and split screen. Anyway they are annoying, but it even happens to the big sites too. Not much you can do when it is a person.
I keep a very close eye, and clean out as soon they leave their poop on my blogs. Delete their memberships and so they never exist on my site for more then an hour or so.
Some of the buggers have seen their stuff deleted and their accounts gone, so they now try to open account do nothing for a day or two and come back to leave some poop. Well guess what I am there cleaning it up as fast as they can leave it.
My members don't even get to see anything. Nonetheless it is annoying but part of doing business I guess
|
Yes, get those too. Usually if they add a picture, I let them exist, but change their account password and edit the profile to what I like.
Most are filling in the "headline" field with links.

Yes I know they are bots. Some are real people. I also get the ones that put links in the description or headline.
I just added the new field in the sign-up. Not sure if I chose the right question, lol. I just put, "How many sides does a square have". All I could think of this morning, lol. Will that be good enough? I guess I will find out today hey. ;) Thanks for the info guys! Boonex forums are great for getting help.

Your welcome keystroke.
The security question really is up to you, it should be a common sense question anyway.
It's not only china either, I started getting hit hard from the country of Sweden and right here at home from Kansas City..

I am getting hit hard from China and California (US), lol. Strange, usually just get spam from places like China, Nigeria or Russia. Ah well, so far so good on the spam/bots. :) Thanks to everyone for all the help. |
Well I have blocked the evil countries. I have put a question on the join page. Still getting bots and real people spamming. I do not want to split up the join page into two pages. Anything else I can try. :( I really wish Dolphin would record the ip's of people that sign-up, grrrr. Only tells you the ip if the person joins and then logs in! How useless is this!
Only thing I can think of is to put stat counter code in the site to see whats going on. Digging through cpanel just takes to long.

It's my best tool; I have a full account with them for years, priceless info to me.
How many times they login, pages viewed and the actual exit page. The last thing, exit page info, tells me what pages do best on adsense.

WOW .... why block china ! come on guys ..... this country sends incredible traffic!
I know this cause I'm ranked in their top 50,000 sites.
Even with my site being so popular in China, member base (chinese) is very small and I get next to none spam from them!
WHY?
Because I prevent it.... Actively stop the spam or add a small membership fee (say $1) to allow access to post blogs and similar !
Spammers with not pay a cent to spam and or get sick of seeing their work removed, and in-turn halt your problem.
At the same time you can continue to get excellent Traffic !

I don't block countries anymore since adding the simple question to the join form.
I do agree with you Josh, it does drive ranking and presence on the web.
What's funny is China is not the top for me on this site example.

Ah yes ... We also mainly draw US traffic and members however china is also a great traffic sender and why block the extra traffic went you can still benefit from it and stop spammers at same time, like with the question on your Join Form

even if China was 99% Spammers .... 1% of China would be quality user and traffic and you turn this away ?
1% could potentially be millions of quality users.
I have chinese users who contribute quality contents.... Are they spammers ... NOPE !
All other spam blocked / not made pubic, or removed! its simple.
Well your choice ...
I continue to get their traffic, block all there spam and still benefit from Ad clicks, Traffic Rank, some good contents and A SPAM FREE NETWORK

Well at least Detective08 is open about it. It appears at least 50% of his traffic comes from China... though I don't see any links for Chinese languages. I'm not sure what to make of the site... the primary purpose appears to be to maximize traffic in order to generate money from ads... which is perfectly fine. It is interesting to see a live Dolphin site with very long list of 'add on' modules... of which many appear to have all their default sub-pages visible. It's obvious Detective08 and his wife have done a lot of work adding content everywhere to get the site going. He's extremely proud of his site and we should all be so lucky to feel that way.
That said... I agree 100% with keystroke... I prefer to block China.

NO NO NO ....!
I never get 50% traffic from china ... maybe 0.2% lol
I was highlighting that my site is personally highly ranked in China and yet I don't block them or suffer from their spam !
Please observer my Google analytics and traffic for the past few months

As you can see we get almost all our traffic from the USA and China is not even on the list :)
Yet I am in china's top 42,000 sites

You are correct to a degree, I added a lot of contents in the beginning for example latest news, articles, etc etc.
These days I have a lot of quality user generate contents like articles, videos, blogs, business profiles and similar and only have to worry about keeping the site running smooth and keeping of quality.
Each different service / add on modules are treated as individual services and fully open to viewers even though the site and all included is indeed one website.

AhhhAAAA! I found a way to share all the evil spamming domains that I have blocked in hotmail. I just load up the page that shows me the blocked domains and emails. Then view source. Lists all the domains and emails there. Now I can copy them right from there. :) Thanks to everyone for all the help. |

Quite a handy module. If you have a site that is based on the English language, or is a site with a specific geographical focus, what possible reason could a person have for NOT blocking the entire country? Show me a site like this, that doesn't block China, and I'll show you a site with hundreds, if not thousands, of completely useless accounts. Even if they register and don't post spam, odds are they will just be an empty database record.... wtf good are those? To take it a step further, If you have a site that focuses on Chicago nightlife, why not block the entire frigging planet, and just allow registrations from the US?
Blocking registrations by country is the smartest thing a Dolphin site owner can do. They can still view the entire site... they just can't join. It's also useful to block US based anonymous proxy servers... Maxmind makes a great tool for this.
