Display the login pop-up on homepage?

Hi Friends,

When you click 'Login', it display the login pop-up. Is it possible to display that pop-up by default when some guest visits the site homepage. And it should disappear for logged in members. It would be nice if this can be done as this would get more registered users I think.

Is there a mod lying around for this???

Thanks

Mick

anyone any clues for this one?

It should not be that hard to do. A bit of code changes to rewrite the body tag to call the javascript showPopupLoginForm() on page load for those that are not logged in should do the trick.

I don't know of a mod to do that.

Just my opinion, but I think that would scare more people away that it attracted.  I'd think it would be rather annoying.

My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees.

i was reading this mick, and trying to figure out how it would know who is a guest and who is a member. if a member comes to the site, they are not recognized as a member, until they would "login". so how would this be distinguished who is a member and who is a guest based on accessing the site. regardless of member or guest, one of two actions would most likely need to take place, join, or login, if they plan on access the complete site. well that is a presumption.

but anyhow, maybe i cant read any more, but that is what i seen you ask, is that you dont show a login java pop-up for members, only for guests, and you want it to load when the access the site. no clue how the browser(s) would know who a guest is and who a member is on this one.

Well, as i read it, he wants that thing to pop up first thing basically forcing a login or a join of which the join link is available in that popup.

That can be done via the onload event in the body tag. But you don't want that onload event to be there if a member is already logged in.

So i believe i get want he wants.

But i have to agree with HL. That would scare me away as well.

deano do you know how spiders consider onload events, will they be able to craw through with that there since they are only text based?

I ask because I would love to have a splash page come up like hustler users, its very nice but I don't want to block spiders out.

It should not bother spiders.

@Dosdawg - I apologize for any mis-understanding. Like deanne suggested, the pop-up would be displayed for all initially. But once a user is logged-in, the pop-up should not show up again for that user. In some cases logged-in users just close the browser but select to save the sessions in which case next time they come to the site, they are still logged in...so for all those cases the user should not see the pop-up. Basically, you need to check the session variable or a cookie. If it's set, then pop-up does not shows up on onLoad() event. If not, then pop-up shows up.

@HL - I agree it might annoy some users but i still think it will bring a lot more registrations.

And regarding spiders, I don't think they would care about it at all...

Thanks deanne and everyone...a simple mod for this would be good :)
