Dolphin 7.0.1 and Mods.. Should I ?

I was thinking the other day ( I know.. dangerous). But seeing how some of us, including my self, have purchased MODS for our D7.. What is going to happen to all of them when they release ver. 7.0.1. With almost 170 tickets (probably more by the time of release) being reported, this would be just like a full new install.. almost. Of course this would also wipe out ANY modifications done to your sites.

So here is my question..

Would you suggest to folks NOT to buy ANY mods for their site until this release? Would you only download the fixes that would resolve issues your site is currently experiencing? Or simply face that fact that you would have to reinstall all the mods you currently have on your site.

My site seems to be running just fine right now. I did have an issue with the Facebook Connect. If any members updated anything in their profile when using facebook connect, the next time they signed in, it would rejoin them using a fb_ prefix. I have since download the fix for this and its working fine now. So I am not sure what I should do from here.

I wish that Boonex would somehow separate the fixes individually, but I know with this many being released at one time, you will have no choice to run an update like the previous ones.

So what are your thoughts and suggestions for running the 7.0.1 update when it arrives?

I was wondering this a couple weeks ago.  I was asking about a "change log" or something similar, and whether or not Boonex would be making that available upon the next release/update.  I've had extensive work done on my server, within Dolphin core code files, language keys and mySQL, and I don't want to have to go back and re-do all of this stuff now that my site is public, and seems to be finally running smoothly.

For now, I am keeping an internal change-log, so if in the event Boonex doesn't release an update only package, at least I have a list of things I need to do to get my site back to it's current state within a day or two.

I am willing to bet the next release will follow the latest trend of endless re-writing, seems to be the most likely way of rolling out versions around here lately.

I've been asking for a download with ONLY the changed files fro quite some time now, but I doubt they will ever do it.  I've been creating my own upgrade packages with only the changed files, and then I run the necessary sql queries.  It makes a lot more sense than needlessly overwriting 5000 files.

My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees.

I would like to see an "upgrade only" package as well HL. I believe that I was on the same train as you asking for that too. But what I am afraid of is that no matter how it's done, specific files that have been altered to allow purchased modifications will be overwritten. Causing anyone who has mods to re-code all the php files that just got replaced.

I understand that if SQL quires were involved with the modification, there should be no reason to re-run those, but its still a headache to deal with. I am having to take an inventory of the changes I have made so I will know "what" is going to break during the upgrade.

I imagine most site operators have thought about this as it is a critical issue.  I am trying to be conservative in my mods until the product stabilizes a bit but there were some I absolutely had to have.   I made such a mess with D6, that I am trying to do a better job with documenting my mods, and whenever I make a change I put it in Google docs.  Still, when the next release comes out it could be a pretty big job and I am not looking forward to it, though I do want the base product to continue to improve.   An upgrade procedure with just the changed files makes perfect sense - probably too much sense for here.  Another thing that would help if we had a rough idea of when they are going to do an upgrade.  Boonex seems to like surprising us on these things, but if we know it is coming out imminently most would hold off on mods but if it is a long way off most would do those mods.  Even having a rough idea would help- is it every two months? - or quarterly? - twice a year?  I have no idea - does anybody?

IF (and that is a big frikin IF) the 'Mod' is released as a Module and plays by all the Module rules, then upgrades to D7 core files should be a non issue.

In an ideal world, the worst case issue would require the Module writer to release an upgrade to fix any issues.

Boonex even has a way to check for updates! Wow! Too bad I have yet to see anyone use them...

But... In my limited working with third party mods, most developers are still requiring changes be made to core files. Even if they include a 'Module' that requires an install as a 'Module'.

As for the number of tickets... LOL! Boonex has NOT and will NOT have fixed 170 issues. Lots of those are just rejected tickets! Out of the top six tickets, four say: resolution set to invalid.
