A few suggestions for the downloadable apps for future D7 releases which should apply to "Desktop", "iPhone","Android" and similar....
1. When user clicks on, say "Desktop" app, instead of inmediate download, he/she should be directed to a separate "app terms of use" page ("I have read and agreed to" type checkbox included). The text content of this particular app download terms page should be customized by each webmaster in accordance to their local laws and legal advice by editing the corresponding lag string. So, user checks the box in agreement and hits "Download Application".
This really is a simple enhancement that does not require major core modifications, as all we are doing is adding a redirect prior to allowing the app's download.
Ideally too, this action (time-stamped agreement and download of the app) should be logged somewhere, too, for admin to pull out in case of conflict. (Ok, this one might be trickier).
2. Once the App is downloaded to user's system, when hitting "install" a little window should pop-up with a little disclaimer re the applications impact on the user's system (i.e,, you install this application at your own risk and hold xxx.com free of any responsibility blah, blah, blah), and a link to the above-mentioned app terms page.
Perhaps in some markets the above is unnecessary, but, in some others it is definitely a must--and, like it or not, a practice that will eventually extend everywhere. Plus, it does not hurt to have the extra protection.
Cheers!
PS I am not sure if this goes here, on another subforum, or even the blogs, so, moderators, kindly advice if it needs to be posted elsewhere.
