Dumb Question - Groups

Kindly explain exactly the function of the Groups Module please.

Quote · 14 Apr 2011

It gives members with similar interests, a way to organize themselves on your website. The default Dolphin group module doesn't quite have enough features though.  I added AndrewP's 'Group Photo Albums', 'Group Scheduler', and 'Group News' modules.   I also added Rayz 'Group Chat' module.

I expect it to be used by bands and musicians, night clubs, sports team fan clubs, and various other entities, as a way to organize their fans, followers, customers etc, in one place.  With the mods I've added, group members have a discussion forum, an improved photo album system, can post a schedule of group activities, can post group news to keep members informed, and they have their own private chat room.  Basically, they have a website within a website.  Just about any organization that has member base, can use the group feature on your site to organize themselves.

Thanks Houstonlively; my application is more business based. I wish to allow lets say, plumbers to discuss about the new pipe material, would this module help me do this?

So they can create their own group and discuss all about plumbing or that particular topic? Also is there a way so that anyone who joins that group would receive an email when there is a new comment or new topic?

But I do not want a forum? Can I still have a discussion without the forum?

Group admins can send broadcast messages to all group members at any time.  I really don't understand why anyone why anyone would not want a forum.... and how else would you have a discussion?  Group forums are identical to the standard forum, so members can subscribe to any thread and receive an email notification of any new post.  Groups would be a great way to organize plumbing, electrical, carpentry, roofing, HVAC, landscaping, flooring, and other topics.  AndrewP's group addon modules would be a great enhancement for these type of groups, but I doubt a chat room would be of much use.   You could use group albums for "How to' tutorials,  The group scheduler could be used to show a schedule of conventions and conferences... the news module could be used to showcase latest technologies, etc.

I don't know what your exact business model is... I'm just throwing out some ideas.

And pretty good ones they are I must admit. I will study it more detail, especially the mods.

Off topic houstonlively, I know you are well versed with Dolphin, and I am tying to find an answer to a solution. I know ShashaE gave me one option, but my follow up request was never had a response so i am still stuck.

I wish to remove Video from my site. So i know how to do it in membership and in the menu builder in admin, the one place that it still shows up is in the Member Menu Bar (The this bar that appears on the top or bottom of screen. There when you click on profile (image of half body), those options still show up. Any option that I want to remove in module I can thru admin and membership, but I cannot do it from this one place.

Now SashaE showed me where to delete it by using phpmyadmin, my question was how do I re enter it in the future should the need arise?

Can you help?

Admin>Settings>Language Settings>In Manage Keys enter - copyright - >check the box besides Search and click on search. Edit the Copyright Key to the company you wish to display at bottom of your site.

Hope this helps

I don't understand what you want to do.  If you don't want videos, why wouldn't you just uninstall the video module?

No, I am of the understanding that there are other modules that are dependent on it, so you cannot just uninstall it.

Yeah, your right.  Events, Groups, Store, and Wall modules require the video module.  I complained from day one to remove module inter-dependencies.  So if you don't want videos, you must remove the Events, Groups, Store, and Wall modules.   Sounds like perfect Boonex logic.

It can be in the background I do not care if I cannot uninstall it, I just do want it be visible. For instance in the Menu Builder, I can remove the video blocks and it is no longer accessible to the member, the only problem ie it shows up in this one single place that I need to find a way to remove. Now I was told to delete it using phpmyadmin, I just want to know how to put it back later if needed.

Thanx for asking the question presscon, and thank you houstonlively to answer. I was a bit woundering exactly what 'groups' module was myself, now I know, and it was a good answer as well ;)
