Eating up bandwidth on closed site

My site has been closed to the public ever since. (am using D7)

However, I'm already almost at 2 gig limit on bandwidth... for a closed site... that's what puzzled me. After some investigation...

It looks like my IP address had accumulated all that bandwidth and 307,000 hits. Huh?

I leave my web browser open on my test site alot which is protected by .htaccess and apparently, my test site and my web browser has been exchanging hits and bandwidth without my knowledge nor input.

How did that happen? I'm gonna have to postpone the opening of the site until this is resolved and bandwidth usage reset.

Please advise.

Oh jeez! You're right... doh me!

My numbers in my head wasn't working right... Yeah I shouldn't worry about 2 gig when it should be 2000 gig.

heheLaughing by the time you get to 1.000gb you should be making some $$ with the site so a server upgrade will be possible :)

You do bring up a good point though, that I griped about over 6 months ago.  If your site visitors leave their browser sitting on a page like forum spy, chat, or shoutbox, you'll have many, many thousands of ajax requests.  I've suggested many times that chat, shoutbox, and anything else that makes repetitive ajax requests, enter an idle mode after a period of inactivity by the user.  2GB isn't a lot of BW, but if you had a few hundred people on a chat page, it can add up to a significant chunk of BW.  This is something that really should be fixed.

My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees.

I agree. I suspect few hundreds of my future members will leave their web browser open and running. As well as desktop application being online 24/7.

My VPS will be very busy/nonstop with all of these going on when it should be idle. Hopefully 7.1 will resolve this issue.

Thanks for your input.

The voice in my head that tells me to burn things is saying "don't bet on it." He's usually right, too.
