Front page Categories block only displaying a few categories?

Im using 7.06, and I have approved several user submitted categories as well as adding many of my own for several areas (blogs, articles, ect...)

But my front page categories block is only displaying 2 or 3 of the categories, and they are not even in the list that is displayed in the admin. (I previously deleted them.)

I may be following improper process here, Im not sure. No cache is enabled, but I cleared all of them, including manually clearing cache from the files.

Any tips or leads available for me, or should I bang my face on my desk and ignore the problem?

did you create the actual categories via admin panel ??   if you did not then do it and once things are added to that category they should show fine ;)
