Has anyone noticed?

You can't embed a video from one Dolphin site to another?

So what?   You can't embed a video hosted on your OWN dolphin site.

I think I'm missing the point here.  I'm not sure there even is one.

Not sure I had a point but to say the video embed setup in Dolphin is sadly lacking in capability. It's not that hard to embed a flash movie from just about anywhere you can come up with one. Why did they just make it youtube capable? In my old portal, it was a simple matter of placing the url of the movie in between bbcode flash tags and voila. If you could come up with the URL, you could embed the flash movie unless it was coded to not allow it.

In theory, I should be able to copy the code from my video page and embed it right back into my own site. Not that you would want to encourage that but the capability is there.  There are so many small applications running around on the net that can help you glean any flash url it should be a no brainer to make it possible.

I just hate a good idea that was never thought out to it's logical conclusion. So many parts of Dolphin fit this description.....

The reason you can only embed youtube videos, is because it's the only whitelisting filter that comes bundled with htmlpurifier.  It is not a good idea to allow just any embed code to be used on your site, especially embed code that allows script execution.... it's begging for trouble.

With that said, additional whitelisting filters are definitely needed.  I've posted several threads about this, along with how to allow embedding most videos by enabling htmlpurifier's safe object and safe embed.  Additional whitlisting filters are the best way to go however.  I may put together a mod that provides a number of additional filters, because I don't think it will be coming from Boonex anytime soon.

Embedding Dolphin videos on a Dolphin site is only half the issue here. The same problems also apply if you want to embed a Dolphin video on another site that is NOT Dolphin based - IE in a forum running on PHPBB.

The PHPBB forum needs to be set up to allow posting of Dolphin video via BBCode - a mod to PHPBB.

I provide free video and photo hosting to my community for use on other sites but for many this is no good as they cannot post videos on other sites. It's okay for members that have access to use the embed code such as blog users, site admins etc, but no good for the average user.

I think that there should be a lot more provision and promotion for integration into other sites - ie plugins for PHPBB / IPB / Joomla / Etc. This would boost the use of Dolphin for video and photo hosting sites.

Those two statements make no sense.  Embedding a Dolphin video in a BBcode based site is completely unrelated to the issue in D7.  Embedding a Dolphin video in site that uses BBcode is no different than embedding a video from ANY site, into a site that uses BBcode.... you create a custom bb code.  There are plenty of mods for forums that add that functionality without you having to do it yourself.

In D7, in places other than Orca Forum, HTMLPurifier strips the object and embed tags, UNLESS the htmlpurifier configuration schema is compiled with a whitlisting filter that allows specific embed code.  The purpose being, to allow embedding flash ONLY from trusted sites.   A youtube filter is the only one that comes with htmlpurifier, so that is all we have right now.  There really needs to be upwards of 30 whitelisting filters added to htmlpurifier.

The problem, if you can call it a problem, is that those additional filters don't exist yet.  The workaround, is to enable htmlpurifier's safe object and safe embed features.... albeit at your own risk, because the folks at htmlpurifier.org advise that these features are 'experimental'.  I did a little testing with safe object and safe embed, and was satisfied with the results.

In any case, NONE of this has any thing to do with the OP, "You can't embed a video from one Dolphin site to another?"   The only reason I even posted a comment in the thread, I though it was a bit unusual to think that embedding from other sites shoul be allowed, just because they are based on the same php script.   After it was pointed out that embedding a video hosted on your own site would be just stupid, I should have just bailed.... because I can think of several very good reasons to do that.

OK....Now I'm going to bail
