Help: Fatal error: Out of memory...

I noticed I wasn't getting as many new members the last few days.  So I tried signing up and I got this error:

Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 63438848) (tried to allocate 64 bytes) in /home/ustillup/public_html/inc/classes/BxDolDb.php on line 293

This doesn't happen all the time.  It only happens some of the time.  But that's okay cause I only want some of my visitors to become members.
When I looked into this on the net, I read that this might be a possible solution:
Add:  php_value memory_limit 32M  to .htaccess file

But why is this suddenly happening now?  And if I need to increase my memory limit, what should I increase it to (32M, 64M)?

I've been having a lot of problems with my database lately.  Is this just another issue with the db?

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, so I'm guessing it had something to do with the size of the picture I was uploading when I was signing up.

When I added: php_value memory_limit 32 to my .htaccess it gave me this error:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 6 bytes) in /home/ustillup/public_html/inc/classes/BxDolDb.php on line 293

I recommend the memory_limit being around 256M or higher.

Okay, here is the crazy thing.  After more than an hour of playing with php values in my .htaccess file I finally gave up and started removing blocks in the signup form.

When I removed the 'Looking for: Man (or) Woman' ... I could suddenly sign up every time.  What the heck is going on.

jason,

i believe you have said previously that you are on a dedicated server, so skip the settings in the .htaccess and change the settings on your global phpini.

as to why its happening, good question, and most likely the answer from AlexT would be a misconfigured server.

Yeah, I am inclined to agree.  Thanks DosDawg (and Magnussoft).

I have passed on my info to both Andrew and AlexT.  I hope someone can identify (and maybe resolve) these ongoing issues.
