High Amount of DB Entries

I have a question.  I'm trying to create a college/university site where alumni can register and tell abit about themselves.  A tool where former classmates can find each other.  My problem is adding the college/university.  Since there are thousands and thousands of colleges/universities nationwide, is there a way that when a user types in their college/university it gets automatically added into the DB and gets included in the list?  or do you know another way?  Eventually, I would like it when a user goes to my site and clicks each letter of the alphabet to find their college/university and do a search that way.

My vision:

user logs in - search school - state - city - click first letter of school - a list of schools pop up under that letter

Can I achieve this?  If so how?

Thanks,

CH

Well you could try to rip it from classmates.com - however that is a well supported service that already does pretty much what you want to do.  It would be tough to compete with them since when people first use your system their chance of finding an old classmate would be close to zero.

You need to start with 2 mods to your site.  First is Dependent Fields.  This allows you to arrange the schools by city=>state=>school=>class and so on.  You can run them in pretty much any direction you want.

Here's the link for the modification.  I've got it on my site right now, and it makes life much easier for the members to find each other.

The next mod I would recommend is one of the more pricier single mods offered for Dolphin, but it's another I am running and it's simply amazing.  It's called Profile Types Splitter Premium.  This one allows you to run up to 30 different types of profiles (which you will want to consider to help limit your lists.  Colleges, Universities, Community Colleges, Vocational Schools, etc.)  Here's the link:

As far as the comment about Classmates.com goes, that site does not take as many hits as people think it does.  It has severe issues with ease of use and types of communication available.  Myspace, Facebook, yahoo and so on also try to do what your doing.  If you think you can do it better, making it easier for the members to use, then go for it.

Besides, there are millions of porn sites out there, and yet people keep grabbing Dolphin to start their own porn dating site.  Go figure on that one.

Thanks so much for your response.  That was exactly what I was looking for.  So if I was only doing lets say high schools.....would I still need the 2nd one?  I have the splitter on another site.  I love the mod, but I don't want to pay another 150 for it.  The site I'm doing is probably going to be a free site.

You can try that.  Just because it's a free site doesn't mean you shouldn't invest in it.  The better you make the site, as far as appearance ease of use, the more your members will stick around.  This increases your membership count as people like to hang out where other people are.  In addition, this means more revenue as they click the sites ads.

Instead of doing just High Schools, I'd go with the Splitter and break it into the multiple groups.  This is the reason the successful sites are successful.  They upgrade constantly and strive to make themselves user friendly.  The ones that are crashing now have stepped away from that theory.  AKA:  KISS  Keep It Simple Stupid.  No offense intended there, just a saying we have in the marketing world.

Thanks for the advice.  I decided to invest in both mods.  I'm just trying to figure out how to use the dependent one.  It seems like I would have to add each school, under each state....this could take me forever!!  Is there another way???  Any advice?

Below is the legacy version of the Boonex site, maintained for Dolphin.Pro 7.x support.
The new Dolphin solution is powered by UNA Community Management System.
