Hosted or Local

I have a dilemma with hosting ...

I'd hosted my D6 (for corporate project) with Hostgator but feel that accessing the site crawls (very slow).

We now set up a local server in our institute - very fast access BUT many technical issues : In D6 - can't upload JPG photos (PNG and GIF okay), in D7 - can't upload (all types of) files.

Other than fast accessing speed, local server setup is simply too tedious - not to mention there are still alot of things yet to try ie. video streaming etc. With unforeseen technical glitches in the line up, I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel for Dolphin on the local server.

Now, I'm thinking of switch back to commercial web host ie. HostForWeb or Hostgator. Accessing speed may not be ideal but at least without the technical "bugs", I can focus to grow the site instead.

Questions : Who here are using shared hosting for your Dolphin? Is it adequate to support say 5000 members? Or are you already using the (more expensive) dedicated hosting?

Please share your experience. Greatly appreciated.

Below is the legacy version of the Boonex site, maintained for Dolphin.Pro 7.x support.
