How can I be logged in, but shown as offline?

This has been bugging me for a while..... I dunno... maybe a year or so.   How does Dolphin determine whether or not I am 'Online'?  Apparently. it has nothing to do with the fact that I'm logged in.  If Iog out, and log in again, my status is 'Online'.  After some time passes, for no reasons apparent to me, I am offline again.

Will somebody enlighten me as to how this is supposed to work?

That sounds like an old D5 problem that's migrated all the way to D7.  In D5 it used you checking your inbox to determine your last login time (grab an old copy and check it).  D7 sounds like it's doing the same thing when in reality it should be using the if logged line at the beginning of every Dolphin page to keep the system updated.  Just imagine the server resources saved if it would just use the cookie it drops during login to update the on/offline status.

I've noticed this, too. If you refresh the page, it will show you as online (and if you refresh again, it might show you as offline).

Nothing I do on the site changes my status back to 'Online'.  The only thing that works, is logging out, then back in again.

Can someone tell me what this admin setting is supposed to mean? :

Time period in minutes within which a member is considered to be online:

The literal translation of this makes no sense to me.  What is the exact intent of this setting?

This setting is for keeping you logged in for minutes after you logout. Set it to 0 and you will never appear online. Set it to 10 and it keeps your light on for 10 minutes. It's actually quite a complex system involving many files and functions so if you hack your sites up this can get messed up. If its broke, check list_pop.php , profiles.inc.php , bxdoluserstatusview.php , and even a status.js , the profile cache file if used.

Well, my light goes out after this time expires, and nothing other than a logout/login cycle puts me back 'Online".  This is a big problem for features like the instant messenger.  I wouldn't call my site 'hacked up'.  Other than a few third party modules installed, I haven't done anything to any of the source files that should interfere with this system.  I'll have a look at those files, but I don't recall ever modifying any of them.

It's amazing how much stuff I can do on my site while I am "offline".

This is just nuts.  Does anybody else have this problem?  Dolphin almost has me at my breaking point.  Sometimes I feel like I've wasted the last two years of my life.

I recall that being for after a member logs out.

I've also had similar things pop up. I've always just wrote them down as minor annoyances and never bothered to bring them up.

My status gets changed to 'offline' when I have my site open in a browser tab, but the tab isn't active.  My status will change to offline after this time has elapsed.  After that happens, no manner of activity will change my status to 'online'.  There has got to be something basically wrong with the way this is implemented.

This may sound stupid, but what about changing your status?

I'll see if that changes me to online.  I had to replace the std account control... I use all of the IBDW stuff.   It won't solve my problem though.

OK, here's how the 'Presence' behaves.  Once my status has changed to 'offline' while I am logged in, clicking on 'online' in the presence block had no effect.,, nothing at all happens.  No surprise here.  Conversely, clicking on the 'offline' selection in  the presence block, does something that includes a page refresh.  I guess at that point, I must be "super offline' or something.  After the page refresh, clicking the 'online' selection in the presence block, will execute some code and change my statue to online after the page reloads.

Like I said mine didn't work until I upgraded to 7.0.5.  The Instant Messenger alone should be enough to let your site know that you are online, because it sends a request to the server every few seconds.

Same problem with 7.0.9

just saw this thread now. After a member gets auto-offline (by inactivity timer in admin panel) it will not go back online when he starts browsing the pages again. This is one of the biggest bugs because it makes a social web useless if its not working correctly.

I really wonder why there is no mechanism to reset the internal timer again, then set the user to online or the status he choosed before. The strange thing is sometimes its working.

Cronjob doing this always and i think this has nothing to do with how it works. Anyway i am cleaning the cache very often over the day.

I must say sometimes the user gets online again after some minutes, but i don't understand when exactly. Is the value from admin panel means he is counted as offline after x minutes and also online again when he is doing somehting within x minutes?

If it is like that and i set the value to 5 minutes, so he goes offline after 5 minutes of inactivity and only comes back online if he is 5 minutes active on the site?
