Ban China. U dont really know were they are coming from. U sure it's just chana If you're serving a certain region/country, you can deny access from all other countries, which should bring the spam down to a minimum (unless that target country happens to be China). One thing we did was to require the new joins to enter a code to activate their membership. After they fill out the join form they are redirected to My Memberships. There they have the choice to enter a 8 digit code (displayed on the page. Says "To activate free membership enter this code: 81792818 in the field below) to activate their free membership or pay for full membership. If the code is not entered then they stay as "Guest Member" -- ie. Standard which doesn't allow them to post any content whatsoever. This has reduced spam by 100%. I guess they can't read English otherwise they would know what the code is for. All of the spamming attempts since putting this measure in place end up as a "Guest Member" and therefore their blogs about shoes, bags, and such never occur. All they do is fill out a join form and their account is easily deleted. |

The spamming of blogs has completely stopped on my sites from the anti spamming tools; but now the problems are when a member signs up, they put a website address in the headline and or other fields.. Yes, we had that happen to. What we did was remove the headline, tags, and description from the join form and just left the contact info fields. When a real member enters the code or pays for full membership they are redirected to a How To page that shows them step by step how to setup their profiles, blog, add events, etc. The spammers that fill out the join form but don't enter the code and remain a Guest Member dont take the time then to Edit their profiles. That fixed the problem for us. |
Excellent idea, I'm going to incorporate that on a site and see how it goes.. "likes" ManOfTeal.COM a Proud UNA site, six years running strong! |

this is very good. The spamming of blogs has completely stopped on my sites from the anti spamming tools; but now the problems are when a member signs up, they put a website address in the headline and or other fields.. I have begin to accept their blogs and memberships as backlinks..

One of our sites is totaly free and they still have to enter the 8 digit code to activate their membership. However, after filling out the join form they can either pay for full membership or send an email to membership@domain.com and instantly receive the code needed for free membership. It hasn't hurt membershp signups at all. Site grows about 5 per day. We also block the IP ranges in the .htaccess. So together with the IP blocks in .htaccess and with the added but easy step of requiring the code, we haven't had any problems since with spammer accessing the site. About once every week to two weeks a Chinese spammer will fill out the join form but that is as far as it goes. They can't add any content and their profile is deleted. This also gives us another IP range to block.
