How do i customize template in D7?

I have looked all over this forum and still have not found any info that works for me. I am trying to customize D7 using Firefox's "firebug" add-on that allows you to select an area of a website to change its CSS properties. Every time i do this, it tells me that the file to change for any part of D7 is located in the "cache_public" folder. But when i modify the css files in the cache folder, it only changes for firefox and not other browsers. I know i'm doing something wrong here.

What is the correct and easiest way of creating a template for D7? Can i get some easy steps to follow? (i am very familiar with D6 but i am a newbie to D7)

I'm not sure about your firefox addon, and I haven't yet got to the point of customizing D7 yet. Try using the CSS-viewer. It will give you all the div classes, widths, heights, fonts, colours etc  I think the template files are in the folder however iv not yet checked.

Hope this helps a little

Since you gave it a effort, changing the cache files will do nothting.

The files you will need to play with mostly are in:

templates/base/css

templates/uni/css

common.css

general.css

Make sure you have backups before messing with these files in case something goes BOOM.

Disable all caching in admin. and delete all files from the /cache directory except for .htaccess

Firebug will then indicate the real css files

All of your answers were very helpful, but it was the last one that really helped! Works perfectly now thanks!
