How to create new Promo Images

What software do boonex use to make the Promo Images?

I am trying to make new promo images from photos but cant get them the proper size for as the default promo images.

If resizing them in Photoshop it distorts the pictures and looks shit, If I resize the width with the maintain aspect ratio enabled the height is wrong.

How can I resize to the same size as the default promo images but still keep my photos quality

Hi,

if you can find the image sizes and have source material, I can help you make the images how you want. Give us a shout if you get stuck.

You may have already found your answer, but I am trying to the same thing, without requiring any additional software tools.

Here's my planned approach:

- First step - get the correct aspect ratio. The promo jpg's are 994x262 (W x H), so the ratio is 3.7938 : 1.

- Open the original picture with "Microsoft Picture Manager".

- Look at the width of the original image.  If it is (for example) 1600, you want the height to be 1600/3.7928, which is 421.7 pixels.  (If the original is 1024 width, you need 270 height...etc...)

- click on edit, then crop.

- move the handles vertically to get (about) 421 pixels height.

- next use "re-size" to set the specific dimensions you need (994x262) then "save as" using a new file name.

- exit Picture Manager (but don't save - this would modify your original image file).

I am just going to upload my re-sized files to try this on my site.   Will post again with the results.

Great thanks Leonard but you have totaly lost me with the maths, Me aqnd maths just dont mix so all the numbers are way over my head. But it was interesting

I will try to put it a different way without numbers.

Basically you need to start with large photos. Resize to get the width you want maintaining aspect ratio so the image does not distort.

Then use the cropping tool. You will need to crop the image to remove some from the top and bottom to get the height you need.

I use photo shop or paintshop pro. Any good editor will have the resize and cropping tools you need.

Because these images are wide, you will be best off using wide-screen or panoramic images to start with. Standard photos cannot be used unless there is plenty of space on top or bottom that can be cropped out of the image to get the proper height.

Great thanks deano.

Yeah thats why I posted the question in the firsat place because I was using PS to make the images using resize and maintain aspect ratio ect but when made into the promo size even with the maintain aspect ratio on they just looked crap

along with what Deano has stated, the higher the resolution the better your work will look.

a photo taken at 15MP/12MP looks much better than something you copy off the internet or one using older cameras.

If taking pictures with a camera, set it to widescreen mode, and at the highest resolution it has.
