Is It Possible To Change a Member's Name?

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know if it is possible to change a member's name and if so how would it be done?

Thank you,

Jeff

Administration > Members > [Member]

This will bring you to the profile edit page of the user, which will allow you to change the username. If you want to change the member's first and last names, you can do that from there, too.

I also recommend you remove the username field from the list of profile fields editable by users, and keep it as a field only editable by administrators. It can cause breakage if members change their username in some areas (like forum posts).

Hi Nathan,

Thank for the response and also you are right I never thought of that to make that field for admins only...So may I ask how does this affect the login and all of the content the member shared ie photos, videos, blogs, comments on profiles etc?

Thank you,

Jeff

I'm only aware of it breaking posting history in the forums, but I haven't really tested the feature. I only know of the forum issue because Orca tracks posts by username, and not member ID.

From what I can tell, the rest of the script uses member IDs, so everything else should work.

Niiiiiice ok Nathan,

Thanks so much for sharing that info, I was concerned if we did that, it would cause havoc with the affected member....

Yes, the member will have to use their new username to login. You can also login with your email or member ID.

Hi Nathan,

Log in with email?  Is there a MOD for that? Or comes with Dolphin?  Sorry I can't remember because I am using a SPLASH page for login and universal login at my site.

Thanks

Jeff

By default, members can login with either their username, email, or ID.

From what I can tell, the rest of the script uses member IDs, so everything else should work.

Actually the photo albums use nickname as well. A change in the nickname will result in the creation of a new default album. Thus all photos that were in the origional album would have to be moved to the new album manually by the member so their profile photos show up.

However, this bug does not show up if my facebook connect module is installed. So anyone who has it will not see that problem and will be unable to test it. I have a profile edit event in my mod that detects a change in the nickname and fixes the default album name.

I should have remembered the albums issue. I recall having to fiddle with that once because of a changed username. It's ridiculous that anything at all is tied to the actual username and not the member's ID.
