Is there a way to stop these FAKE New User Sign Ups?

I like Dolphin but can't take much more of these fake new user accounts.  We get (on average) 25 fake account sign ups a day.

Is there a way to control or eliminate this?

Thank You in Advance,

Allen

BTW, I already have the email confirmation setting "ON".  It doesn't seem to help much.

If you are using the standard dolphin email confirmation then it really does not work. I found this Free script to be more useful for me although it will required a little code change but it works as an email confirmation should http://www.boonex.com/m/Mandatory_Confirmation

Check those fake users IPs.... If you are not trying to target users from the whole world but only to certain country, I would download the free mod "Join by Country" to limits which country can join your site. It will be even better to combine it will other spam prevention mods like the one stated by jacjig.

Good Luck

I still don't see how we will ever stop these spammers.

It is too easy to find our sites on google, this is the latest and most popular search I see from my sites.

inurl:my_page/add/

and directly from http://www.google.com.hk/#hl=zh-CN&source=hp&q=inurl:my_page%2Fadd%2F&btnG=Google+%E6%90%9C%E7%B4%A2&oq=inurl:my_page%2Fadd%2F&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=s&gs_upl=1416l1416l0l2759l1l1l0l0l0l0l87l87l1l1l0&fp=78f00477e5ca3665&biw=1280&bih=873

Just that simple search term pulls up nothing but Dolphin sites. Will there ever be a way to hide, I think not.

Staying on top of new memberships is all I can do to "pick and choose" who I keep. I see most sites have just give up.

I think blocking China the Philippines and a few other countries via the .htaccess is the only viable option.

I've had real good luck with AntonLV's Access Management mod. I can block users by IP, by series of IP's even by country. Couple that with Deanos Tools mod and you can even strip all the content left by a spammer with the click of your mouse.

I find that blocking by IP is unreliable if you run a site where you cannot block an entire country. Just the built in DNS block lists in D7.0.6 were causing to many false positives for me.

Members here trying to signup on my site to test my mods were being blocked.

So. I have started a new spam filtering mod to use key words, regex expressions, email addresses and link blocking in the profiles headline, description and email fields which are used quite often by these spammers.

So when i am finished, i will make it available. Going to take a while tho. Spammers are tricky. Figuring out the most common methods and ways to combat it while keeping false positives at a minimum is a time-consuming process.

I'll buy it. I have experienced the false positives.

Great if this works deno.... This is so badly needed. Just try to think one step ahead of the slippery, anoying,********.

Perhaps something else that might work as well.

What if you add a hidden text box, asking for some lame information. bots most likely will feed it with some crap, and if the hidden text box is filled with text you know that it must be a bot and thus a spam bot.

I still think we need a universal dolphin database of known spam e-mails and Ip's, and on sign up, this database is checked, added to and amended. It wouldnt take long to block out much of the spam hitting our sites, and someone could make good money running this as a service.

That method would pose a problem. Checks on a central database should not be done on every sign up. If the server providing this service was to go down for a while for problems, repairs, maintenance, ect it would create a problem. So live time checking is not a very good option for many reasons.

No. The method i would use would be how computers antivirus software works. It downloads a new database every week of so.
