Let's talk about SEO in this thread.

OK, I am working on SEO today, and am curious about what some of you have done to help get better rankings on your site.  I'll list here what I have done, and follow any tips or suggestions some of you may have too.

First things I have done are;

1. Filled in my meta information.  One thing I have noticed, is the meta system only works for the main index page.  When I view my source on any other page of my site, the meta tags are not there.

2. I've changed a lot of the category (box) text on the main page to reflect either my domain name, or domain keyword specific text.

3. I've enabled permalinks, and been careful about adding keyword specific tags.

There are SEO mods for D6, don't know if there are any for D7 yet, that will enable you to set the content page specific.  Meaning Profile, Music, Video, Classifieds and so on.  Take a look around, if someone hasn't done one for D7 yet, I'm sure they will shortly.

1.  Working as intended apparently, the text is misleading as to where the meta information would be shared and they will change it to Homepage in the 7.0.1 revision.

2.  SEO on D7 is very different and the good D6 SEO mods have to be extensively modified to work with D7 but they will work once you change everything. Otherwise you have to just wait.

Something to take into consideration, the modules/areas of the site that need to be SEO specific are only the public areas.  If you block off certain sections to only registered users (i.e. photos, videos, forum, etc) then those do not need SEO changing as the spiders will only be able to view the public places.

On site based seo is good in regards to page titles, meta's (don't hold to much water anymore), sitemap, relevant original content and proper page structure. (boonex lacks this). Off site seo (internet marketing) is key. Submission to directory’s, including; yahoo directory, business.com directory and many others. Original keyword dense article submissions, blogs and building authority in your site. Building authority and proper link structure is most important. (be careful on your submissions and links, you do not want to be penalized or black listed...)

Who knows what the next seo/marketing method will return great results but if you follow the basics to build a solid foundation, then you should be ahead of the competition. Of course, most of the time moving up significantly in rankings takes some patience, time and some money, but the end result should give you a great roi.

i have the site run from about 2 years, and one week ago i see my google pagerank change from 0 to 2... i was happy...

But today is agains 0 ... i don't change nothing ... so i'm ask you (just for understand) what happend ? Why this changes ?

Well, google has recently updated there algorithm and you have to be patience. By checking you page rank a few times in a week doesn't mean anything. Build authority proper links and keep your site updated with relevant content. Great links are worth there weight in gold. (watch the link farming and such).  If your site was a page rank 2 for awhile and then dropped rapidly, then there could be an issue.

For sitemap generation I used the google sitemap tool : http://code.google.com/p/googlesitemapgenerator/  It's a PITA to install, but once it is going fine, you'll have a fully automated site map generation tool that will keep it constantly fresh.

Ok, I have a question for you.

What about Google Adwords? What if someone is willing to put up say, $5 a day for a little targeted advertising? Would this (outside of the obvious) increase your SEO standings? Would you be placed more favorably in the rankings?

I used google adwords on one of my sites in the past. I did not notice any increase in rankings, but it did generate a lot of hits to the site.

When I started messing around on the web, SEO was simple. In fact, if I remember correctly, I was here before the idea of the "search engine" but I digress, LOL.

I am beginning to wonder if SEO placement is all that important anymore. With the advent of paid sponsorships, getting to those top spots on the first page is becoming increasingly difficult and almost not worth the effort. Like you say deano, Your rankings didn't seem to improve but your hits to the site (what we are actually after in the end) increased noticeably.

In the grand scheme of things, being successful in placement has a lot to do with who is linking back to you and the quality of their content and who is linking to them. To that end, paid sponsorships are going to get you more visitors, that means more traffic, and more travel from other sites to yours hence improving your ranking. I think your ranking is directly related to how important your site seems to others and that importance is directly linked to your traffic generated.

Now I have a headache so I'm going to work on a smaller problem for a while, like what is the meaning of life?

I just spent 10 minutes typing out a detailed analysis on the last month I spent testing, tracking, and tuning my site for optimization, only to get the "ACCESS DENIED" page from this forum's ridiculous ability to keep one logged in for more than 47 seconds.  I'm not typing that all out again, I'll just add that if you expect anything from the script level, you'll be sadly disappointed with your results.  As mentioned before in this thread, original keyword rich relevant content, and reputable incoming links is about all you have to rely on right now.

Too many horrible mistakes at the script level for me to type out in a list again.  Maybe when I am not so frustrated with such an epic waste of effort I will feel like typing all of that stuff out again...

That's what it's all about, incoming link and rich page content that is updated often.  Meta info can be messed and cloned so many search engines don't use it anymore.

Hi, i have one question agains... If i search my site (ichatyou.com) with google, show up with the short description take from one html block i insert on the home page (is an advertisment for adult site)...

Why happen this? What i can do for show the description i set on the meta description of Dolphin?

Google decides when to use your Meta Description and when not to use it. The snipet they return in their search engine results page is based on the search term.

4. I have changed as many of the "Orca" references as I can find, in both the code and the language key files.

5. Now that I have a consistent sitemap to look at, I am back-tracing all references to page titles that have "Boonex" or anything related to Boonex or the modules names, and gotten rid of as many as I can find.

mauricecano, let me ask you 1 question about google sitemapgenerator.

I had contacted my hosting asking which of the programs I need to install, apache 2.0/2.2... but those programs are only for dedicate servers and that is not my case. Can you tell me a similar program for google site map please? For what I understand, with this you put here, is not necesary to execute sometimes.

To help your SEO's would it do any good to put an RSS feed from another website (say a competitors) on your main pages, but have the rss feed not be seen by members or visitor as you can use the check box in the page builder to do this. Or am I just smoking something I just figured it would just add more keyword content to your site or would it if the words are not visible. Just a thought.

1.  If it can't be seen by members or visitors, how would a bot see it?  A bot is a visitor.

2.  Bots can differentiate between visible/hidden content and you will get smacked in the ratings for having hidden content.

Go ahead, knowing the above and try it.
