Member Status - does it make any sense?

How do I put the member "status" on a member's profile?  It seems there should be a block for that and the public profile would be a good place for it.   In fact, how can I put that "editable" member status so place else.  I would like it on the account page.   As I understand it - the editable member status, only shows on the "view profile" when the member is looking at their own profile.  Is that correct?   I only see my member status rarely and that is only when I am viewing my own profile - and when I am doing that I don't expect to be editing anything.  Does this function make any sense at all?   Could someone explain how we are supposed to use it?

You can change your status message here:

1. Member menu
2. On you profile page (just click on status message field)

Why would we want to click a box to see what the status is?  Sounds like extra java code that causes a huge amount of redundancy.  Can't we just hard code this to come out of the DB using the profile.php or whatever file?  I gotta go with Caltrade on this one and say it needs to be made simpler.
