Navigation menu - changing default for "People"

I want to change the menu item name "People" to "Members".   When I change the default name on this top level menu item, and click "save" it seems to work.  When I close that block, however, and then reopen it, it reverts to "People".  Is this a bug?  - or am I supposed to change this name in the language keys or something?  I have some anomalies in my installation, so someone please let me know if this happens for you also.

Thanks

Rob, I've been pretty fortunate changing the Menu Tabs via the Language Keys.  Never had a problem with it reverting back on me that way.

Thanks Mydatery,

I am on about my fourth unsuccessful install on this beta, when I go to language keys and do a search on "people", nothing is found, but the top explodes with this error message:

-

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /var/www/vhosts/calstartup.com/httpdocs/admin/lang_file.php on line 146

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /var/www/vhosts/calstartup.com/httpdocs/admin/lang_file.php:146) in /var/www/vhosts/calstartup.com/httpdocs/inc/admin_design.inc.php on line 54

A workaround, of course, is to define a new top menu item ans simple call that "members".   I got sick of doing nothing but installs, so am trying to work with what I have.   Will do table exports after I define things, and hopefully be able to do an import if I ever get a successful install - and I had better luck with DB1 than with DB2.  Have written Boonex support several times and given them full access, but all that ever happens is they write back and say "The the parameter open_basedir contains some value that prevents Dolphin from seeing relative links and should be cleared".   My hosting company, however, insists it has been cleared, so I am stuck.

when you search for language keys  don't hit enter  you have to click on apply

Good tip Prolaznik - I didn't know that- thank you.  That is a "usability" bug someone should report - it is not clear that checking that box will do a search.

rob,

i just went and checked this to see if in fact you had found a bug? possibly boonex staff could be correct. i made this change on cookedinthesouth.com. please review the screenshots and let me know what you done differently so we can get a better idea of what you have going on?

admin panel modifying nav menu button

this is of course the default view, so we can compare apples to apples here., nowe we provide the full menu for review:

menu from admin after change

then i took a shot of the menu after it was modified to ensure that it was holding.

modified image of menu item on nav menu in admin

rob, i was unable to reproduce the issue you are facing. so i guess its back to the drawing board for ya on that one. guess its not necessarily a bug, but a server setup possibly?

after looking at what prolaznik had to say about ticking the checkbox i went to investigate this as well. and indeed if you hit enter, there is the error you describe rob. so i hit tab, spacebar, and ticked the apply checkbox, and it ran the search. below is a screenshot of that action.

weird deal in admin language strings

so yes rob this is a defined bug, will go to track now and make a report, because that is not really logical to have to tick that apply button rather than hit enter as we have done since Dolphin v-5.2.

Dosdawg - the setting held after it was saved, but not after I closed and reopened it, but I never get the top item to say "members" at all, so yes - it is probably a server issue.

rob, i just wanted you to know, that i went to trac to make this bug report, as that is something that can cause a ton of grief a simple ? info ? would help out a ton right there. well unfortunately, i cant create a new ticket as evidenced in the screenshot below:

unable to submit to trac

so as you can see i was not able to create the ticket. so maybe somebody else one of the pundits possibly can submit the ticket.

I am still getting this error - 4 betas later.  When I try to change the "caption" for the top level menu items by changing the default caption to something else, the window saves and closes as normal but the new caption will not appear on the menu.  For example, I want to change the top menu name of "Ads" to "Classifieds" but am unable to do so.

For a few of these, I have managed to change the caption it by changing the default name, but for some of them even that doesn't work.  Is anyone else experiencing something like this?   I suspect this is a bug because in the earlier beta the block wouldn't even close, and now it seems to close properly.  I suppose I could, and probably will, just define a "new_item" top menu item, but I would like this to work properly so need to know if this is a bug or my set-up.

Make sure your folders have all the correct permissions. Dolphin uses the database info to write to the lang.php file. It sounds to me like your database is saving the info, but not writing it to your file.

Additionally, I skip the entire step of creating an additional language string for the navigational menu. Instead, I just eliminate the _ for whatever I am editing. This overrides the need for finding it in the lang file.

Good luck

So you are saying, in the example I gave for "ads" - which I want to change to "classifieds, I should change the  language key:  _bx_ads_Ads  in the field box to simply "Classifieds"?  Is that a good practice?  Will it work?  I was a little concerned about changing a system name because it caused me major heartbreak in an earlier Dolphin version.

You saw my site, and I straight rename all the fields in the upper navigation menu. Forget the _ and creating a lang name too. It's redundant and not necessary.

Note that this may not work for other areas where language is needed, but it does work fine for the top menu.

Crapola, for both "Ads" and "Sites" I can change my system name, but not the default caption.  When I reopen the edit block, it goes back to the original :-(

Since I see Boonex people responding to some posts tonight, I want to mention that I am still getting this same error on D7B6.  In fact, almost nothing I do can change the top menu names.  I can't even add a new top item and move the subheaders under it.  They just don't show up on the site.  This is a weird one - any ideas?

Rob

UPDATE: Just sent access info to Boonex support email - please take a look if you have the time.
