Need a Cooliris explanation

I've been to the site, played with it. I understand it pretty well. What I don't understand is how it is enabled in D6 or 7. I noticed a few members photos displayed in it but not all. Could someone give me a rundown on it? How is it set up? what actually enables it? etc.

I also wanted to give my impression of it. In IE it really sucks. It is an absolute resource hog and can easily hang up the average machine. When it works, it's kind of cool the first few times you look at it but after you get used to it and you start trying to find specific files, you really see what a pain in the you know what it can be. Now Firefox deals with the CPU usage much better and I don't notice the slowdown nearly as bad but the entire ap still strikes me as a pretty face with no brains. Kind of cool to watch it wiggle by but once out of site, it's completely forgotten.

Too much flash, not nearly enough function. I can tell you my members will tire of it quickly and many of them will be completely bewildered by it. I will see how it works on my site but I am already pretty sure that I will just disable it completely. I have looked through the mods here and have found a couple very good photo display systems that will work much better than Cooliris.

Anyways, thanks ahead of time for any help you can give me.

I think the worst part of cooliris is that your members will inevitably be viewing photos via cooliris.com in a new browser tab.  I don't like the idea of members being directed away from my site just to view photos.  I guess I'm the only one around here that thinks this makes no sense..

Cooliris is about one thing.... advertising.   When people launch cooliris in FS mode, they will be viewing photos via cooliris.com, and everyone will get a look at that advertising menu in the upper left corner of the screen.  It's a great concept if you're cooliris.com... your little advertising menu gets a ton of exposure... not much in it for the web site owner other than the fancy flash viewer.

Cooliris was just a shortcut Boones took to compensate for some badly needed album navigation features, so they could get a product out the door sooner.  I am 100% certain that all those flash photo album mods by various boonex coders were a part of photo album discussions at Boonex, when it came time to decide on a flash plugin for albums.  That's probably why we have cooliris and not some open source flash viewer.  Can anyone spell 'conflict of interest'?

I like this one better: http://flashnifties.com/index.php

That looks like a good ap but am I missing something here? Isn't this a community project? Why aren't we looking within? I saw several good galleries, one in particular struck me as very well done.

Yes you are missing something. You have cited a perfect example of conflict of interest.
