New D7.02 404 mesg for profiles, groups. Pls Help

Hi - My nice new D7.02 front page and join form work. So does Admin. However trying to go to a profile through any link or direct URL gets a 404 page not found mesg.

I then installed some Boonex mods such as Groups and Photos, and trying to go to their pages also brings up the 404.

Obviously something went wrong in the installation.

Any clues would be much appreciated.

I am not a programmer - but I get by - most of the time ;-)

Its on DosDawgs hosting so Im pretty sure its not the server configuration...

Thanks

Dan V

Make sure you have the .htaccess file in the root directory of your installation. It includes the mod_rewrite code for the directories.

Thanks Magnussoft - I sort of picked up through the forums here that it might have something to do with that.

There is no .htaccess in the main folder.

Was it supposed to be created during installation?

What does it need to contain? Or is that specific to each installation?

There was an .htaccess file in the installation folder but it just turns off mod rewrite. Doesnt seem like it would be relevant?

Thanks
DV

If you're talking about the .htaccess file in the root directory, that's the one you're missing and it should be uploaded. It actually turns on mod_rewrite which is needed for the URL's you're trying to use. Upload it to the root directory of your installation.

Also dont forget when you click file manager in cpanel  to check the show hiden files and folders.   by defualt when your account gets created there will be a .htaccess in the root folder.  sometimes dolphin will not copy over the defualt .htaccess...

Thanks Guys - I dont know why there was no htaccess (as I did not do the file uploading) but that seems to have fixed these problems.
