New User reg - and directory creation

When a new user registers - am I right in think Dolphin creates a directory for each user - such as say - John joins and it creates a directory www.websitename.com/john/

I am just setting up board and it looks liek this is the case - but the directory for my test user - looks like it failed to be created as I got a 404.

You wrong ! Dolphin don't create any directories there... It's virtual structure that worked with mod rewrite from Apache server

I am confused - i only have myself (admin) and 1 user on the site - I created a generic new user called pauline - when you click on her name / image from main page it goes to www.websitename.com/pauline  - it should go to her profile I am guessing - instead it goes to a 404 because there is no www.websitename.com/pauline

What is going on then?

Any ideas anyone please ....

when you call the url with the profile --> pauline, and you are getting 404, i would suggest you check your mod_rewrite.

first thing you can do is make sure your .htaccess is loaded in root which has all of the mod_rewrite directives in it. if not, put it there. if you uploaded the files via ftp, some servers will not allow for the ( . ) iteration prefixed files to push up onto the server. so you have to force that file up onto the server.

if your htaccess file is on the server, and it is the correct one which holds the mod_rewrite directives, then you need to ascertain if your server has mod_rewrite engine on.

but as sasae says, there is no directory, and the 404 is not directly related with not finding a directory, but more0ver, not able to resolve to the path which is called.

Check your .htaccess file whether it has correct contents in it. Also, make sure you have mod_rewrite enabled in your server.
