A member just asked how they could know when they got comments on their profiles, pics, etc.. I explained about the notification icon in the member menu and they said they didn't see comments there. We tested it by commenting back and forth over one of my photos and sure enough, I got the notifications, they didn't. I'm assuming that this is because it was on my photo, not theirs.
Here's the problem, if they don't get the notification on the comment that they left then the conversation is totally one sided. Unless they track every single item they've commented on and then go back and manually check every single item they've commented on - they'll never know that someone responded. This is conversation-death for a social site.
