If anybody thinks Dolphin documentation is deficient, now's your chance to speak up by posting a comment in this blog:

http://www.boonex.com/unity/blog/entry/Petiton_To_Get_Boonex_To_Implement_TikiWiki_on_Boonex_com

If you don't speak up now... don't complain later about poor documentation.

Great idea!

If all it needs is hosting, let me know, I will provide hosting for the project.

It's not about hosting.  It needs to be part of Boonex.com  Anywhere else just wouldn't make sense.

Hey... If this doesn't get the support of a lot of members here, I'll drop my pursuit of it, and D7 docs can remain in the dark ages.  The lack of documentation is responsible for a good percentage of forum activity, and keeps this a busy site.  Maybe Boonex likes it that way.

BoonEx seems to be the type that can't manage to sit down and write about anything for a lengthy period of time. Perhaps they have restless leg syndrome.

Creating a manual about Dolphin and it's many possibilities (and idiosyncrasies) will require someone with some very specific journalistic skills that I am quite sure no one at Boonex really has. Just because you can build something fantastic doesn't mean you can explain how it works in laymans terms to the masses.

I actually have some skills in that area but there's no amount of money that would convince me to start this project.

We want to finance the creation of documentation, not your retirement. That said, both James and I have been separately working on documentation for Dolphin in the form of books. His is the well-regarded Unofficial Dolphin Manual, and mine, the Dolphin Bible.

Then you don't need my input. Thank god. :-)

If there was a god in this world to thank, we wouldn't be needing to write our own documentation.

I posted on your blog HL.

My Dolphin 7 book will be ready and will available in print and PDF version.

I have over 800 pages but the publisher can only take 300 or so. I will post the bits I have after I sort through it.

Wiki on the BoonEx site would be great. I will have a special app on my nerd site that will complement it as well.

Let's just do this.

...sip...

Updating my BoonexNerd.net site.

Sounds like you've been busy James.  The last time I tried to argue for a better wiki on boonex.com, Victor quickly dismissed the suggestion, citing that this site already has a wiki.  True, but a wiki that doesn't allow you to include images, just doesn't do it for me.  Some may prefer MediaWiki, but the more I look at TikiWiki, the more I like it.

I suppose the reason most like MediaWiki (including myself) is because it's the "standard" of sorts. It's well supported, and is used as the wiki solution for many of the large, collaborative web sites. TikiWiki has begun interesting me greatly, and I would have no problem with that as the platform of choice for a BoonEx-hosted wiki.

Petition is withdrawn, as is my willingness to help in authoring any future docs.  I now consider this matter closed. Good luck to all you new guys.  You have a bumpy road ahead.

yeah well i am sure if you were lining their pockets, they would find a way to get an updated wiki going. how bout it, one of you fine politicos what would the cost be to get an updated wiki implementation going?

you guys seem to have time for these other silly little projects, how about stepping and finishing what you have started and what you have promised to so many on this site?

the 200K you gave towards that silly blog-it software, can you disclaim that was proceeds from selling license for the boonex dolphin application that you are now shy away from.

no documentation is one of the biggest hurdles for most any developer. you guys do decent work (at times), however, the fact that you fail to test anything you are putting out, and if you do test it, it is very minimal, then you have no documentation. seems to me Adnrew, that for $1000.00 there could be some form of documentation to go along with this application. just because you ride under the open source license, does not set you immune to conforming to todays standards of prograrmming, one of which requires adequate documentation.

oh speaking of the open source, might as well open this can while i am here, since i know this is going to rub some the wrong, way, might as well just make the flesh peel back.

where is the fla source for these flash apps? now that has been ongoing for two years that you were going to release that. tell me exactly where is it?

Documentation Boonex, this application needs documentation. I think we all sang the same song with Dolphin 6.1.2.3.4 as those were released back to back last year. now Dolphin 7 is released 2009Dec, and we are not better for the wear.

why couldnt emphasis and focus be set on Dolphin 6 and getting it stablized, why was the urgency there to release Dolphin 7 in its bug ridden state, untested, just one heap of code, with no documentation.

I think i am going to ride with HL, as we contribute to this community, please reciprocate, and contribute to us, by listening when we ask for something, and not turning a deaf ear, because  you cannot see any recompense for the effort.

it is clear you are not going to create the documentation, and there are several of us who are willing to provide those efforts for this community, and it is just asked of you to take a whole what, 45 minutes maybe, and get an updated wiki setup, and import the deprecated instances you now have.

even your trac needs to be updated.

DosDawg

Agreed there is a huge missing documentation. The little documentation that I do find is very sparse, and much of it contradicts one another (ie it is old and out of date). Need some major work and updating.

Well, since in related ex-blog post, Andrew Boon summarily dismissed the idea, It's not going to happen.  I don't think he even bothered to take the time to understand what was being asked.  His post talked about Boonex not getting involved in third party integrations, and that such a request should be treated as a module.  Since his post made absolutely no sense to me, and considering he didn't even take the time to read and understand what was being asked, I just deleted the blog.

If Andrew Boon doesn't care about this... why should any of us.
