Popup notifications without bottom member menu?

I read that the menu bar at the bottom of the pages is a resource hog, would there be a way to remove it, but keep the popup notifications? The notifications like "member is online" "received new message". I believe those popups come from the bottom menu bar, is this correct?

But all your listed notifications make overloaded your server :) not member menu!
