RMS Required?

Hi everyone.

I have been waiting on D7 before building our community site, and have eyed up some hosting providers. But have a quick question of the community because I think must have missed something fundamental and need some assistance.

Most hosting providers offer shared hosting plans, which, not being a dedicated server or VPS, will not provide an RMS server. So I assume admins using this type of hosting service don't use RMS. So what would that mean functionally to a site to not have RMS?

Thanks in advance.

D6 & D7 require the use of an RMS for all items to work fully.

RMS handles things like Video/Audio Instant Messenger & Chat Rooms, Boards and so on.  It's used for the Ray Widgets more or less.

Now, if you don't have an RMS then you can either lease it or do without it.  If you don't have one or lease one then your chat will work, but it will not have Video/Audio capabilities.  Your Boards will NOT work without it.

If you have a VPS or Dedicated Server you can run your own RMS.  If you have a shared then you must Lease the RMS from an RMS Provider.  Many of the Shared hosts offer RMS with there shared hosting plans.

Thanks for that nice summary of RMS.

It's a shame many of the hosting providers do not make it clear that you need RMS or that they provide the RMS server as an add-on. Most of them make out like it's sooo cheap to have an unlimited disk/bandwidth account for Dolphin, but in reality you need RMS as well. Only one hosting provider I found makes it clear you get RMS included in the price.

Thanks again.

You should check out arvixe. They are cheap and offer 24/7 support over the phone and include the RMS. They are bloody brilliant.

Thanks Profesize, not that I was directly influenced by the forum alone (I had a chat with Arvixe), but I cannot wait for Arvixe to get it together. So I went for another Hosting provider who are setting me up as we speak.

Thanks everyone for their input.
