RMS install - on Debian

Hi.

I'm trying to install RMS 7 (for Dolphin 7).

But inside the folder I don't see much documentation.

I'm scared to make damage to  the server, that is NOT A REDHAT.

It's a ubuntu (debian based) and I HAVE ALREADY TOMCAT INSTALLED because I use it for another application.

Can you kindly explain me how to configure things and what RMS is?

I need to enable webcam chat.

This could be difficult to do.You should find someone really able to work with RMS.

I can advice to contact your Agent, if you do not have one, AntonLV is the right solution.

What I don't understand is what is RMS.

Looking the files, it seems a jsp application. But I see more jars than one.

Is it one or more applications?

Can I just upload it to tomcat folder and see if it runs?

After that, how can I configure it?

I don't find any documentation.

RMS is a modified version of Red5.  So to learn all about Red5, do some Googling and that will give you a better understand of what RMS (Ray Media Server) is all about.

RMS enables certain Flash widgets to work such as A/V Chat, Board, IM, and Video Comments by processing the widgets data.

Great directions, I'm a total noobie and was able to get RMS running on my test site running Ubuntu. Follow each step!

My testing site; http://jacksonville.dyndns.tv/m/chat/home/

This test server is running from home, it might be slow..but it works.

I followed the directions above, few things I had to tweak to complete, but it works great for testing functions of Dolphin mods or changes before taking them to my "live" site.

my problem is that this seems to bring with it a new tomcat installation

I am a strange case, I already have tomcat working

How can I be sure I'll not screw up everyting?

Is there any RMS guru?

Go to the Java website and download a copy of Java for your operating system.  Be sure to get the self extracting version.  Install it in the same folder you are installing RMS for simplicity.  Then, you have a dedicated Java install for your RMS.  No need to worry with TomCat as Cats can be tempermental sometimes :D

If you need further assistance, post here or contact me directly.

Thanks!

Jimmy

@newton27: Because you managed to do it, I need some feedback.

Can you kindly tell me if a room can be configured for a "master" to be viewed and the other just to look?

Like a conference ...

And in case that is possible, is also possibile to put a password to protect the conference?

Yes, thanks @jctwebsites,

this is the java setup I used @Nakao

Install java:

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts

The way I have this server set as "testing" only visitors can text and read...if you want live cam, membership is required

Yes, rooms can be password protected!

Great feature for conference work.

oh, and BTW you should try the setup yourself, it's the only way to learn...

Nokao, setting up the Media Server on Debian and Debian-based systems is easy, and I do it all the time. If you want a walk-through, you can send me a message and I will help you out.

my problem is that I have already java + tomcat succesfully installed and I don't want the setup to mess up things.

I guess if it's possible for my tomcat to open the RMS applications "as they are" without using installers to create a separate installation of tomcat.

like Magnussoft states..it's easy.

I have set this up on several machines, it will not change the way your current site works. Like I said this morning please read the install directions provided here. That is what I used...

The Media Server does not rely on Tomcat, and only relies on Java, as it is based on Red5, which uses Java. Just follow the setup information and point the configuration settings to your Java binary where needed. Or, do what jctwebsites suggested and include an installation within the Media Server folder and have it point to there.

If you want, send me a message with the location of your Java installation and I'll configure the settings for you, and send you a nicely configured package that's ready to use.

Also, @newton27: the command you just gave is for Ubuntu, which includes proprietary software in its repository. Debian, on the other hand, does not. Tongue out

JCT let's not spam in the forums or make suggestive advertising comments.  We all know you do website work by your screen name alone already.  Geesh... And to think people accuse me of not following the rules.  The rest of your info is dead on though, gotta admit that.

I don't see an issue with someone offering to do the setup for someone else.

I resolved following the guide you provided me.

I still have to understand why there is tomcat stuff inside the zip if the application only relies on java.

Now I have another problem, I'll open another thread.

Nokao, RMS relies on Java, but RED5, which it is based on, requires Tomcat to manage the web part (working on port 5080) :)
