Remove 'private' blogs from 'Latest blogs'...

Does anyone have any idea how to hide blogs that members set to 'my friends only' or 'only me' for example from the 'latest blogs' box on the Homepage? It currently shows a big graphic with a lock on it and the text 'Private' if the user sets it as such. This doesn't look great!

Or, as a workaround, how is it possible to set the default value of the latest blogs box to 'top' instead of 'latest'? Thanks!
