STOP email notifications for users

Is there a quick and painless way to deactivate emails sent to users?  It wouldn't be all emails, for example password reset email would still have to go out.  What I don't want are the lame "you got a greeting" "you got a new comment" type emails to go out to my users.

Any ideas?

Open profile editor and click on box for EmailNotify.  Select Advanced and set default to 0.  This will uncheck the box which is the option to receive emails from the site.
