Search Functions Need Explaination

I am getting member complaints about the search function.

I tried this myself.

I am a Man searching for a Woman

I use ZipCode Range 250 miles

I get a search window which shows Men

The results never change if I change the miles range

The results never change if I enter in a zipcode that does not even exist.

The other search functions seem to work as expected....

Any ideas?

i think the entire functionality of the search and matching should be explained because there are some serious issues with how it functions or for a better word, malfunctions.

AlexT, Igor, or any other who can shed some light on how the search and match functions work on Dolphin it would be greatly appreciated. yes we have had some decent tutorials written, and they are all greatly appreciated, however, there are many functions and features of dolphin 7.0.5 that are still unexplained and still non-functional:

site search feature

profile matching and notifications

site store cart payment

site store cart members add products

polls track voting

privacy settings and admin privs when privacy is set

video embed source from dolphin

membership levels and payment module

articles and members being able to participate in article writings

many features that are now current source code hacks that should be administrative settings

image upload size limit

avatar profile image explained and separated

security feature (that has been abandoned through the entire 7.0. release

source code clean up and consolidation

order of precedence on module installations

complete removal of a member from the site

revisit the issue of when a module is removed (uninstalled) why it does not completely uninstall

language string search, the checkbox should really be replaced by a button

clean up of flash apps, where portions are left behind from Dolphin 6.x

video embed where continue button does not catch focus when url has been added

method for admin to add or remove functions from Action block

true moderation settings

update banner functionality so that it functions and has some logic

im sure that many additional items that i am not aware of could be added to this list. i know you guys are busy working on releasing 7.1, but can we step back and fix some of the things that are not completed or not function in the Dolphin 7.0 series?

guys, do you realize, that you have not completed one version release in about 3 years, not one. if Dolphin is going to be the leader in its industry, niche social networking / dating environment, at some point something needs to be done about goal setting, and following through with task completions.

yes Dolphin is a good foundation to build on, and yes it is open source, and yes, it can be an extremely dynamic environment, is it too much to ask that when you release a version, that that version be debugged, preferably by boonex staff or hired beta-testers, then released to the public for further testing, and those bugs be addressed before moving onto the next version or release? quit assuming everything is an enhancement.

if you release a version with a module, and that module does not function, a request to fix the non-functional core module should not be considered an enhancement.

one other thing, though many are now using auto-installers, i still wonder why there is a SKIP button on the install steps of Dolphin, why in the world would you permit any of the installation steps to be SKIPPED?

and can it be explained why the Dolphin 6.1.6 migration module is still part of Dolphin 7.0.5, when it is of absolutely no use?

not knocking the product, i am providing good clean constructive feedback on what could be a great product if there was some focus placed on its actual development.

pplaut: yes unfortunately search and match function is not working from 7.0.0 release - as there is NOT some coplex ticket for search/match function In readmap for 7.1 so Im afraid it will be NOT fixed even in 7.1 so you will probably have to wait long time same as me and most of people who wanna really use dolphin. SO ..bad news... Well I will never pay 999 usd for dolphin at this stage development I consider as an alpha release - so you are right you should go with cheaperm license for sure - but now its too late ..bad luck

and in Adrew Boons words, thats the way it has been and thats the way it will always be. it is not as if the situation is unknown, and when it was brought to open discusssion, the topic was locked.

i was accused of wanting new features when all i have asked for is that the features that are being sold, be addressed and made functional. but clearly its acceptable that you list half-working or non-working features in your software, then get pissed off because it gets requested that you fix the situation.

Is this function not linked to the google maps mod. I was under the impression that you can set the map to at least one field in the profile to assist with search IE: town country city post code ? my site is still in testing/development/repairing :O) so have only a few test accounts I am sorry that it is a question not an answer ... but there are feilds for this in the sql .. Well if you paid `999` $25 to fix it might be worth it .. this might assist you i have asked the developer he says it works for profiles .. http://www.boonex.com/unity/extensions/entry/ZIP_Codes_Search the match part appears to work in some sort of way but its not perfect as you have to refresh the search function in extended mode for the blue match bar to show as active, even if you have the code to point at the page to open in extended mode . you have to love the guys and gurls at boonex you pay to tell them its not working correctly and they tell you its repair is a enhancement :O) I think they eat to much vegi mite.. happy thoughts

Default ZIP code search functionality in Dolphin is based on ZIP codes database, since there is no zipcodes data in Dolphin by default - search by zipcode feature is not working. Uploading a lot of zipcodes is not easy task also it causing load to the database.

We will remake search by zipcode feature in 7.1 using the method similar to this mod:  http://www.boonex.com/unity/extensions/entry/ZIP_Codes_Search

i like this answer, makes it extremely clear as to what i have been saying all along. Default Zipcode search functionality in Dolphin is based on Zipcodes database. since there is no zipcodes data in Dophin by default search by zipcode feature is not working.

now isnt that just great. zipcode search in dolphin does not have a zipcode database, so why even bother having a default zipcode search functionality? so this is the line of logic that i complain about, and get scoffed at and tickets locked because there are features and functions that are supposedly included in this app, that do not work, have never worked. but most read the functions, and based on industry standards of dating and social network platforms have come to expect search features to be a default function that actaually functions. that is not the case here and again, when its complained about and asked that it be addressed, for some reason offense is taken on the subject.

AlexT, glad to see that search by zipcode is something that will be addressed in 7.1, however, that is but one small portion of search. and quite frankly none of the search functionality works 100% as would be expected.

alex thanks for this info so its good zip search will finally work in 7.1 but as Dosdawg mentioned zipsearch is just a small part of search and match function which should be in dating site quite clever and robust so indeed its good zip seartch will work but what other parts of search ? Can you please tell us if search and match function will be finally completed and 100% functional in 7.1 or it will be postponed to some next versions after 7.1. I just need that info as 100% working search and match is absolutely crucial for me and for all users who want use D7 for real dating site - without 100% working search and match I cant use D7 at all and Im waiting over year already to that functionalities to be fixed. Thank you in advance for full reply to my question...

Thank you for interest ALex. I really appretiate it.Im running out of time now (have to go to work) so just for start couple of things:

1)users cant search for couple profiles. For adult sites this is a crucial function

2) users cant search by city - every user in every dating site search by city location. By my opinion this shoul work that after country is selected there should appear another field with predefined main cities for a selected country with possibility add more cities

3) users cant search by state or region - same as point 2 above

4) zip search ( but you already explained this is planned for 7.1) so this is okay than

5) proximity search function - users can enter to what distance from their own location they want find others

6) custom editable field where site admijn can actually build his own search option from defined fields in dolphin. LIke users can select to search for certain users looking for certain type of relationship (sex, marriage, free rerlationship etc...)

7) advanced search where user can define certain parameters of searched person - tall, weight, eye colour, hair colour, smoker/nonsmoker, religion. In fact this point is similar to point 6) . In all advanced dating sites - user can setup this advanced search parameters in advanced search. D7 search functions seems to me very primitive for dating platform...D7 have tags field but its absolutely not enough....

8) if point 6,7 will be implemented there should be also a field how much percentage shoul be match 0-100% so user can setup if he want 100% match so all search parameters have to be exact in results or not or second approach to this is that in search results there will be % of match displayed with every result

9) search by profile or user rating

10) ability to search throught all countries or select several countries

11)search by language skills of users (english, czech, reussian ) etc...

12) ability for users to mark in their profile they want to be excluded from search

Please alex if you can make some ticket in 7.1 for make really advanced search/ match module as search/match function - this is really crucial feature for every dating/community site and this feature suppose to be most robust, advanced and mainly 100% working .

. I can live withouit functional store, I can live without many tiny things and bugs but I cant run my site without really advanced search/match function.

I tried setup some functions I report here which I thought are in dolphin already but seems it simply cannot be setup - because there is missing any manual for search/match I cant verify that

Now I have to go to work, I write more when I come back

alexT,

you can reproduce easily and see what the chief complaint is with search, the search is not functional on boonex.us

1. login

2. navigate to people tab

3. search people using the search features on the right column

4. criteria entered

  • Profile Type --> Single
  • Looking for Woman (now this is where things are convoluted, should this be a search parameter i am 'looking for' or is this a parameter the other profile is looking for?') either way its broken, i tried both methods
  • age between 18 -75
  • options -->
  • country US
  • specify a city Atlanta
  • with photo

Return 43, with the larger majority of those being male. now not saying that a male cannot match those search parameters, but investigating further to make that discovery:

profile--> http://www.boonex.us/jchase003

  • gender male
  • country US
  • city atlanta
  • has photo
  1. so based on what i believed i was searching, which would be profiles looking for a male from US atlanta with photo, i would expect female returns for the most part.

profile --> http://www.boonex.us/jasnaylor79 (looking for woman, should never have turned up on a search return based on my search parameters)

  • gender female
  • country US
  • city Atlanta
  • has photo
  • looking for female
  1. so contradiction is that profile 1 is male whereas i would prefer not to be matched to a male if i am looking for a female, secondly, why am i matched to a female that has no interest in males
  2. now yall may swing like that down under and over in the kyrgz, but not the typical search results you would expect from a social networking or dating application.

there you have it, not going to spend countless hours on this, because i know it doesnt work.

then if you look at the match portion of boonex.us why would it return a profile with a 0% match?

Im back from work - now I wanted post about improper search function even of basic search but Dosdawg was quicker :-*) thanx mate .... I have same results on my test site - search criteria are not fully respected in search results as Im also getting males in female search and vice versa - thats what I reported in my post before dosdawg - We need of course proper match % not 0% - 0% matched should be automatically excluded from results..

There are two blocks with own "Search" button below the block.

These two blocks are completely independent !

If you press search button in the first block - only parameters in the first block are considered.

If you press search button in the second block - only parameters from the second block are considered.

thx alex fopr info I gonna crosschek it .. But what about the rest:

1)users cant search properly for couple profiles. For adult sites this is a crucial function. I know I can add couples to search in backend but whole couples functionality in dolphin isnt good - this prolly can be fixed only by reworking couple functions at all

2) users cant search by city - every user in every dating site search by city location. By my opinion this shoul work that after country is selected there should appear another field with predefined main cities for a selected country with possibility add more cities

1) it is possible to search for couples, for example go to http://www.boonex.us ->  People -> Search -> Search People | Adv -> Search by "Profile type" is available in the first block - make sure that you clicked "Search" button in the first block. Also we are going to remake "Couples" concept in 7.1 to make it more universal.

2) search by city is possible, for example go to http://www.boonex.us ->  People -> Search -> Search People | Adv -> Search by "City" is available in the second block - make sure that you clicked "Search" button in the second block.

3) there is no state/region field in the database, however you can add it in fields builder and drag it to any search form.

4) already explained, also there is an alternative - for example go to http://www.boonex.us ->  People -> World Map

5) I think it is the same as 4)

6) this is already exists, please refer to the following pages:

Admin panel -> Builders -> Profile Fields

Admin panel -> Settings -> Predefined Values

7) it looks like the same as 6)

8) You can see you matches here:

http://www.boonex.us ->  People -> Matches (we have set matching percent more that 100% on www.boonex.us site to disable matchmaking, so you will not get search result here, but you can check it on your site)

Also it is possible to display matching percent in search result. To do this you need to enable it in Admin panel -> Settings -> Matches.

9) Search by profile is available using many different ways: ( Simple + Advances + Extended ) x 2 = 6 different customizable search forms ! Additionally users can search using the maps, tags, keyword ! also there is additional admin search !

10) There is no way to select all countries with one click, but you can select several countries with (+) button near the countries list. Also if there is a form without countries list - then search is performed for all countries

11) the same as 6)

12) it is not a bug, it is completely new feature which is unavailable, sorry.
