I have a number of Dolphin sites that Ive worked on over the last 2 years while learning the script and building my main site.
Many of these sites are on premium domains, and have been built to specifically apply to niche markets.
The idea was for each of these sites to run but over the 2 years working on these, I have built a main site that is now going to take my full time attention as a business!
So, I would like to know what thoughts are on re-selling these, or selling them on at Unity?
Each would have its own template and mods that were purchased just for that site, no mods etc are being sold across multiple sites...
Are there any rules that forbid this on unity? I can understand if there were rules to prevent copying and re-selling mods, but that is not the case here. Each site has had its own mods purchased, just for those sites. I have purchased many multiple mods on my account over the last 2 years!
Thoughts?

I have seen rules posted on the forum in the past about selling sites. I know one of them was it had to have a minimum amount of members, 500 if my memory is correct.
I'm not sure if those rules docummented anywhere here on the site or not. Maybe someone from Boonex could give us a link, or maybe just list the rules here.

Surely that would take things into a different legal position where you are selling customer data...
|
Not really, businesses change hands all the time without any of the customers knowing.
Most sites TOS state they won't give out personal info to "outside" sources, but the site being sold doesn't fall under that.
I think Boonex's logic behind the minimum member number is that if people buy a domain name, install Dolphin and then sell it it's like they are basically selling Dolphin. Again, someone from Boonex would really have to state the rules.. that posting I saw was a while back and I don't even remember who posted it.

According to the BoonEx license agreement, you are not allowed to sell your licenses:
"Licensee may not redistribute, encumber, sell, rent, lease, sublicense or otherwise transfer rights to the Licensed Software."
Source : License Agreement
Also, most all 3rd party modules are forbidden to be resold without the owners consent.

I really don't see why not - you own it. You would not be "selling the mods" you would be selling your site, and would no longer be using them. Any other interpretation means that we don't really own our sites, no matter how much work we do on them. |

As discussed many times here before, this has always been a hot topic of discussion. I am not sure I understand the following statement: 'you would not be "selling the mods" you would be selling your site'.
So how would you sell your site without selling your mods too? They do come with the site right? Then I would assume that the price you pay for the site would include the mods. In theory, you have sold the mods as well.
In the end, they (mods) will eventually not be of any use anyway since the 'new' buyer will not be able to upgrade them to newer versions or get support from the developer/owner.
Edit: No matter if you call it 'selling a site' or 'the icing on the cake' you are still redistributing the modules. Example of a 3rd party module readme file:
* IMPORTANT: This is a commercial product made by XXXXXX and cannot be modified for other than personal use. * This product cannot be redistributed for free or a fee without written permission from XXXXXXX.

Sometimes asking too many questions gets you into hot water. |

Why not? The domain name and possibly even the email address (if they used webmaster or admin @ thesitebeingsold.com) would be the same as the one that purchased the mods. How would the mod seller even know it was new owner and if they did why would they care as long as it was the same website that it was purchased and installed on?
I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm really just curious. I mean you can even legally sell your copy of Windows as long as you don't keep a copy.. and it's commercially licensed software.

i do recall there being some discussion about this back in the day. and i think there were going to be some accomodations for selling pre-made sites. i think you would be better to deal with andrew boone directly or your agent on this, and get resolution.
it seems there was some discussion to where you could create dolphin sites, and license the product, and transfer the license to another unity member name. i do recall that was being discussed, as with most topics here, its kinda of first come first serve sort of gig.
personally i dont see anything wrong with it, and as long as you are in communication with the module developers on anything that was added 3rd party from the market, then i think everything should be fine.
