i have a question here and where its not mean to piss off anybody, i am sure it will. what is it about the dolphin 3rd party modules that make the 3x+ the price of modules on a comparitive site such as Social Engine? Just about every module you could imagine is for sale on SE, and the cost is generally around $30 each. i see may of these developers ex boonex employees have taken advantage of what was left off of dolphin core, and put those features and functions in the market to capitalize off of.
i truly believe in the free enterprise, but why would a module with some of the more rudimentary functions on dolphin need to be 3x the cost of a similar functioning module on SE?
at least with SE, you are offered support, with dolphin there is no support other than from the few of us who post in the forums. so why is it you guys want to have premium compensation, but you are not offering the client as an end result a premium service?

boonex charge more because their software is lot better and less buggy. I am not saying dolphin is the best but its many times better than social engine and lot less buggy. But your few points are really thinkable. They can hire some more person for supporting their users so much to do.... |

Well said DosDawg!

Seems that one of the main reasons clients are willing to pay for modules (especially expensive ones), and thereby invest in the Dolphin platform, is their perception they're getting a reasonably supported-product. If that's true then reasonable support is very important and the lack of it will alienate clients for both 3rd party developers and BoonEx.
I think every module above a certain price, say $20, should have it's own support forum that people can review to see if support for the module is actively maintained. I very much appreciate those developers that have setup and maintain support forums for their modules. And I avoid those that don't.
Why BoonEx is does not appear to be more active in resolving issues with their modules is a good question... especially for the Orca Forum module that many members would like to see updated to include more of the common features found in popular free forum packages.

There are only a few good developers that are interested in dolphin.
|
you nailed it there, but even though there are only a few good developers with dolphin, and those who are prudent:
i.e.
Deano
Modzzz
AntonLV
and only a few others, my issue is that comparatively looking at both platforms, and the number of developers on both platforms, there are a greater number of developers on SE, and where yes, that may create the competition factor, and the prices are lower from that point, but cant solely resolve the 3x the cost of similar functionality on the modules.
though the upfront on the license is a bit more heavy. what i would compare is this:
SE platform and Mobile cost = $299 + $30.00
Dolphin platform and mobile = $499.00
so ever that is hard to chew the fat on.
There are only a few good developers that are interested in dolphin.

i am just trying to understand how you answer the question to a perspective client when they ask about the cost differences?

I had not posted that to explain to clients. I am just telling dolphin is better than SE. Many people call dolphin Beast as its code looks very heavy to them. Maybe thats the reason many don't touch dolphin. So, coding a module is not as easy here also. I don't think SE modules are any cheaper than dolphin's. I tried searching there.
This is just my thought..

so much to do.... |
well prashank your opinion on the matter is greatly appreciated, however, my inquiry here is not which is better, but comparitively speaking on a cost basis with general functionality, what are the modules on dolphin 3x greater than than on social engine. which is being used to compare because most all other social networking platforms i.e. joomla mambo.... the community develops and there is no market per se'

ok so then another one to look at to put three in the mix jamroom.net social media platform for the musical industry. look at the cost of those modules, and there are some really nice stuff over there. then again, what you get over there when you purchase a module is real solid support.
support is key, not really so much the price when its close in range, but i am talking about 3x the cost.

umm!! actually i can't find much difference in price at jamroom.net either. I agree with you still dolphin lacks in support for base or module. This forum is the only place for any kind of support anyone wants.
I think jamroom charge too much because it doesn't have that much functionality...

well clearly you have not tried it.
i have an account install phazedbeats.com go register and give it a whirl, and understand i stated its niche to the musical industry. i dont think willl find anything close in comparison on the social media realm.

That looks a lot like phpNuke, yuck!
DosDawg, your claiming good support with each module.
Have you actually purchased a licenses and modules? If so could we test run one of yours?

on which are you wanting to test the SE?
no, i have not purchased a license, i have signed up for the 30 day gig, and dropped a couple of modules on there.
jamroom, no modules on there, thats all stock except for the template.
and what looks like phpnuke, and btw, i loved phpnuke :(

sorry, the jamroom site looks like a variant of phpNuke, which I used to love, that love was lost to a Dolphin..
I had several nukem sites that did well, just was teasing you about it. I still have tons of modules I used.
I tested the SE and it is ok, It's a hard sell to me after using D for couple years, yes the modules are pricey sometimes, but some are worth it to me.
Some of the modules here do amazing things.. I don't see that over there.

I agree with Prashank whole heartedly. It's this forum, which includes posting from a few very active mod developers and several very experienced site developers, that makes Dolphin *seem* worth the huge investment in time, effort and funds.
The tardy support from a few module developers (in my experience) has impressed upon me the importance of researching each module developer before purchasing their products and/or services.

I am in agreement with both these comments. If it were not for a few caring and knowledgeable developers and few of the regular members that actually care about helping others, most of us would be in dire straits. I do not see boonex doing anything to entice the growth and continued support of dolpin developers.
If the trend continues; where the developers are over stressed, small in number and with poor support infrastructure not sure this platform can sustain its own survival.
