Streaming Media Servers

Houstonlively made a great observation in another post about a way to gain some serious bandwidth. I pulled the topic out of that thread (which is out of control again) and started it here.

I like the idea of H264 but I do not think it's going to add much to the basic Dolphin setup. The whole idea of HD Video streaming using H264 (in my opinion) has some serious shortfalls for the average sitebuilder. The requirements for bandwidth for a Dolphin site to deliver HD content of any size will be out of reach for most and trying to make use of the technology without the proper support will only result in total failure.

I am researching the possibilities with the provider Houstonlively found.

A low cost way to provide enough bandwidth to properly deliver the video. The comment was made that several Dolphin site builders could get together and pool their resources to lease one of these servers. They'd have a 1 Gbit setup that is very reasonable.

Dual core Intel ATOM CPU
4GB RAM
2 x 1.5TB HDD
1Gbps DEDICATED BW (unlimited)

By looking at the setup stuff, you can use any OS you want, CentOS, FreeBSD, all the different windows. I mean it's really dramatic. The whole thing is scalable all the way up to a 20 server package for $14,999 a month! (lol, I only WISH!). This 1 gig starter package is only $399.

With the cost of professional 1080p cameras now down to less than $4000, creating truly great content that rivals what the big corporations (news agencies, etc) make is within reach of guys like you and me and I for one, really want to take advantage of it.

Anyone interested?

LOL! Yeah. I think we're in the wrong business. Screw building the sites, lets just build the infrastructure and sell space eh?

Congratulations. If you purchase this kind of infrastructure, you may be able to put even DosDawg's company out of business (and you shall feel his endless wrath).

Atom Processor?

I don't know about that. It has me a bit skeptical about the servers processing power.

Those processors are typically used in those piddly little netbooks and entry level desktops. It's use in a server has me a bit worried.

I was looking at the Xeon processor options, but now that you mention it, I have to agree, an Atom processor does seem odd for a server, especially at that price (which is most likely due to the network). Eh, but it's their server pool.

Hey, there has to be a bottom end selection. No one ever said we have to use it...
