Subscribe /Notifier Mode

I inquired a while back about a mode that works like facebook. When some writes on your wall or comments on photos, sounds, video, etc the user receives an email. Then someone told me if you subscribe to that person this would cover what I was looking for. Well I just tried it and nothing happened. So once again has anyone seen a mode out there that does something like this? Thanks
