Testing bottlenecks on site

Im launching my long time in development dolphin site all going well on Jan 1st 2012...

I have it at the moment on a dedicated server which up until recently has been fine for running the site.

Recently though, and only in the last week, Ive noticed things slowing down a lot.

For example, sometimes if you log in, it can take ages to connect and direct to 'logged in' screen.

Other times it seems fine.

I did have a problem recently with my host, where I was logged in as 2 different users, one in safari, the other in chrome so I could view the site in real time from admin and normal user, while making some database changes.

The changes wouldnt effect speed, they were just deleting categories and so on...

All of a sudden, I was blocked out by my server.

I have several D sites on one dedicated and could not access any of them...

My host said it was nothing on their end etc.. and had me pulling my hair out thinking my server had a problem as it was server wide and NOT just the site I was working on.

Other however could access it all fine....

End of it all, it seemed to 'fix itself' after I asked repeatedly if my host could check my IP was not being blocked. they said it wasnt, but then within 15mins of asking them to re-check, it came back on!

Host still denied it was anything on their end... who knows.

Anyway, since then its been very slow in connecting at times, never had this problem before.

Are there any tools that can be used to check where things are bottlenecking on my script?

Try to find out whats causing the log in delays and so on?

Use the default module Profiler from boonex

What exactly does that do?

Ive often wandered but not really tested it to work out!

Always figured it was something to do with profiles...!

I just think pictures tell all,

pro-filer instructions

Then at the bottom of your site pages, you get these timing results, only the "admin" can see these results.

Interesting, I installed the module, but it just says 'installed',no ref to adding any code to complete the installation...

nothing changes either, not info on display to admins at all. All just the same!

Seems the self installer doesnt quite work on mine!

after installing any module, there is a "+" symbol top right on conclusion box.. click on the plus after install and the module sometimes has some "hidden" info that we are supposed to know is there..

yep... got it!

would be nice if it showed code you have to add by default instead of being hidden!

Got there in the end thanks :-)
