This is how the spammers find boonex-based sites

Here lately I've had several spammers from China find my site and post messages in the blogs hawking their wares.

I looked in google analytics and discovered how they found my site:

They enter into a search engine:

intext:” about us privacy terms faq invite a friend contact us bookmark ”

and

powered by boonex community + login + guest + people

The last one indicates they actively target boonex sites for some reason.

These are just typical advanced search operators used to identify community sites to conduct link spam. It's not isolated to Boonex Dolpin sites alone, it happens with most CMS platforms, any that use the same text/phrase across each site that uses the CMS, even forums like vBulletin and phpBB.

My site doesn't contain any reference to Boonex (indexable) nor does it have the default footer links in the default order yet my site is still targeted by spammers using other search operatives.

The 7.0.4 release will see some more functionality in preventing spam on your Boonex site so looking forward to these tools.

Thanks

most of them not only spam but also making links to attacking sites. They seem very organized and are coming in behalf of higher authority. I caught one from the disguised as ICANN's site.

Most others are logging in from an Hangzhou IP.

If you use cPanel you can block IPs from there. The one feature that comes with boonex script doesn't seem to do the job.

In cPanel you can block whole ranges like 122.222.222 - 133.333.l33 like this, so you don't have to fill in each IP address manually.

I had one posting an attacking site in the profile description.

I let them post, but no more then five links in a blog-post and they also give almost always false info. For this their account will be automatically disabled after 15 days. And with the promotional account they have less features to use. Some changed their behavior, but most are thick as thick can be. They also come  from the same area, most likely one or two creating multiple accounts.

Some I delete and leave remarks on their profile and blog-posts exposing them and leave it there for others to see. Some posts I delete.

I also have had serious problems with these spammers from China. My primitive skills site is mainly used for file storage. I've designed it to work as a photo/video linking site and I never intended to use the blogs or forums since most of my members use another forum site that they are use to. So I was able to deter them from using my site for spam by removing all of the blogs, forums, events, store, whiteboard, and pretty much everything that they were using to post spam.

They're getting desperate and trying to post spam in their profile but it's so easy to see in the extended members view via admin panel that I have been deleting their accounts on a daily basis. I caught one of these spammers, from some 126.com site that seems to be the chineese version of gmail, right after they created their profile and were still online. I live chatted with them and they basically stone walled me so I deleted the account right away and it's been about 1 week since I've had any spammers.

My hope is that someone somewhere is posting about the best sites to post spam on and which sites are no-longer good for posting spam. It's interesting to here about these advanced search's, I wonder if there is a way to find out exactly what they are targeting and just change the titles so we do not show up in their searchs.

Yep I get one every other day which isn't too bad but still it can get worse and worse.  I hope 7.0.4 will stop most of it.

If Boonex adds rel="nofollow" to all links then they write what they want Laughing

Quote · 15 Nov 2010

"nofollow" doesn't seem to help much - they just take anything they can.

Banning China, Africa or Russia, depending yoru site may not be such a good idea, plus they are quick to switch to proxy.

The way they "find" yoru site doesn't matter much - they would find it anyway. You're not going to hide under the blanket, right?

All in all - this is a HUGE problem for everyone in the business and is exactly the reason why we're focusing on anti-SPAM in 7.0.4, which should be released in a matter of days.

Andrew is right, I agree with all of these comments.

Fact is, spam is a problem for everyone running a website, there is no escaping it realistically other than tightening up the security and controls on the site platform itself which is why I am looking forward to the 7.0.4 release.

Any other methods you take won't prevent spam unless you want to block entire countries from accessing your site but then you run the risk of blocking legitimate visitors as well.

I'm currently receiving over 20 spam profiles/blog posts a day on my site so am really welcoming the extra spam controls in the forthcoming release.

Well banning 1 country has worked for now, maybe the new changes will help more. The only people from china on my site were all spammers.

So now that 7.0.4 is released, how do we know this problem has been addressed? How can we tell? Is there anything we need to do in the admin settings?

Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a way to ban a URL so it can't be included in a Blog post, or Profil?

Thanks,

I know this is a bit 'overkill' but block them instead via your firewall (iptables in linux) since by setting the rules in a .htaccess apache still need to start, check file and then deny access eg, spend cpu/memory usage of your site. If you simple drop the packages in your firewall, they never reaches apache or your other services and you will even save space of your logfiles ;)
