I have been thinking about this for some time now and I would like very much to get some input from some of you on it.
I am not sure the friends attribute is the best thing for all sites. Sites like Facebook, MySpace etc are huge and the ability to give special access permissions to a list of 'friends' is a useful tool and can help you manage what would otherwise be a quagmire of milions of users. But what about smaller, content specific sites?
On my site, I approve everyone that joins. I know who they are or they don't get access. You have to be a verifiable member of the towing & recovery profession to get through the front door. Because of this, there is really no need to 'befriend' someone as we are already friends because of the industry we work together in.
I Use the admin friends mod to help alleviate the problem but even with that, people join and have no one to talk to. I don't want them to join, see nothing going on and leave because of it.
I can see many Dolphin sites having this problem, especially smaller ones designed for a specific topic or subject matter.
I think Dolphin would be far more successful if the 'friends' feature could just be turned off.
