Unable to save profile

My members are unable to save changes on their profile, and new visitors can't joined in. I reinstalled from the back up database, and still have this problem. Does anyone have the same problem? Or does anyone know how to solve this? Thanks.

At the risk of this being a stupid question ....

Do you have a checkmark in all of the appropriate settings within the admin panel? There are two different areas for that. First there's the settings/advanced settings section where you can define a bunch of stuff that users can or can't do on your site, and then, also under settings, are the moderator settings where you can pre-approve functions automatically after a member changes something in his/her account.
